Fella's where does a guy find a reliable tap and die set for barrels. I tried fleabay, and the Chinese sh1t is not only useless, it's prolefent!

Where are the Irwin's and Butterfield quality tap and dies in our weirdo thread counts and pitches?

TIA

When I was working I had Butterfield drill bits, taps and dies... about the best for the money. Tool supply businesses can still supply quality taps and dies...

These guys can probably supply some good s h i t .

KBC lists a 1/2-28 plug tap at some $35. Plus tax and delivery.
Brownells has them at US$15. Currency conversion, delivery, tax and tax collecting fee will drive that way up.

Try industrial shops like grainger , and mcmaster-carr in the states or Google industry supplies in your area.
Mcmaster-carr won't ship to Canada for an individual. They will ship to large accounts, like the company I work for, but the shipping and brokerage makes them about the most expensive option out there.
KBC Tools should have what you need, on the right side of the border

Grainger has both regular and bottoming taps in that size.

I use a local hardware supplier for my taps, they're relatively easy to find.
However, they ain't cheap, about $40 a piece, but they are good quality.

Thats good to know. The shop I work at puts in order to McMaster-Carr weekly. I've put in personal order (fancy stainless hinges) and the shop just invoices me at cost. I really need to take inventory of the hobby specific taps I have and maybe put in an order.

McMaster-Carr does ship to individuals, you just have to create an account. There are no brokerage fees at all as they do their own clearance. Shipping is quite reasonable considering you get it delivered to your door in less than 24 hrs.

Tracey Tools, out of the UK.

Excellent quality at very good prices, no crappy taps and dies that are dull right out of the package.

Look at their site and prices.

Everything arrives between 10-14 days after your credit card clears.

I no longer bother with KBC for drills, taps or dies, or even lathe tooling. Tire of some of the crudely finished junk they've been passing off on people who don't know the difference between good tooling and mediocre at best tooling.

Sadly, unless you've got something to compare their products to, it's hard to describe.

I was spoiled by the good tooling available a few decades back. Now those tool bits and files are wearing out or broken and I've had to replace them.

I tried Starrett but they were very expensive. The brands offered by Tracey Tools are cheaper and I know the tools will be of good repeatable quality I can depend on to make clean/precise cuts when used with the proper cutting fluids

I've had decent luck with the Chinese taps and dies. Dies usually always good. Taps can be hit and miss. Always good threads when I am patient and use plenty of lube and clean out the schwarf as I go...

They must not like me, or the lady I talked with was having a hard day or something.
Maybe I'll try again.

I could only dream of that! Unfortunately, I work for a huge company, and perks like that just can't be allowed, because then, "everybody will want to do it"(whiney voice).
