1/38 Twist....

Just wondering if anyone has a 1/38 twist.........what works best for you?? Conicals.....sabots??
 
I know of 2 that have that twist, and one shoot conicals out of it, the other guy shoots round balls with 60g of 2f powder. The fellow shooting round balls uses it for close range deer hunting.
 
Actually it would depend on the caliber. In larger calibers that rate of twist would stabalize (longer) conical bullets, but in tiny calibers like .31 or .36 it would be fine for round balls.

Sorry....I forgot to mention the calibre........it's a .50 cal.........the gun is an older T/C scout carbine which I just bought......the info I found is that all these have a 1/38 twist. I use sabots in my other .50 cal but it of course has 1/28. I was thinking of trying round balls for close range deer(70 yds being the max. I'd think). A good conical for black bear possibly!! I'm not very familiar with the 1/38 and before I play with different loads I was wondering if someone had a favourite for this type?
 
It's best suited for conicals, but if you want to shoot RB's try reducing the load. Too much powder and you strip the threads ( shoots like a smoothbore)
I had an original 45 cal Ohio halfstock , 28" barrel,with a 1 in 28 twist. It was deadly accurate with only 15 gr FFFg :eek:
Unfortunately that ain't no huntin' load. but if you wanted to plink it woud be cheap to shoot.
My best guess, for a RB load I would start around 25 grs
