1/4x22 headless bolts for Mauser bedding

Got mine from Brownells. And the tap set for when I got stupid careless and ended up with epoxy up into a front action screw hole, without any release up in there. And the die, for when I decided I wanted to be able to make my own, or at least be able to clean the epoxy off the "store bought" ones...

Of course, only used the taps and die that once - have done dozen or more Mausers since and have not needed them - 80% sure that is because they are here, that I have not needed them. Always figuring out another way to screw up, but did not do that one twice...

I just looked in the book and on the charts - by gosh, I even have the gears and idlers to set up the old Atlas to turn 22 tpi!!! Should mean I could even do the proper 55 degree cut, if I can get the cutter ground correctly! Or was that just the barrel tenon threads? Nah, who am I kidding - too easy with VISA card to just order what I need from Brownells... But that will "chew on the mind" - knowing that I "should be able to do it with what I have here"... But, as per the Clyde Baker's "Modern Gunsmithing" book, I should be able to make my own taps and my own checkering tools, too, but not quite there, yet...
 
I used 1/4 20's Stainless steel socket cap screws. Cut them at the required length then screw them into the tang hole as is. Add a little oil to keep the squeel down

So are the action screw holes softer than the stainless and it's the original thread that is being distorted by the incorrect thread? Or is the engagement so short it doesn't matter? I wouldn't expect the rest of the screw to be that square with the action though.
 
Thanks for the replies. I was actually on Brownell's site for quite awhile and not finding them before I posted here. Every time I put in 1/4-22 I was getting a pop-up saying "did you mean 1/4-28?" and displaying AR grips and grip screws. I tried again today and I was able to find them, as well as some other goodies.

I get a lot of errors when searching Brownell's website... stuff I know is there...
 
And they won't give you a shipping estimate until you have given them a CC# and all your personal information.

Stainless steel is soft, and I went in maybe 5/15 - 3/8. Enough to get a solid purchase.
The screw's go in a couple thread's, ya just gotta persuade them to go in a bit more
