1.5 month old mossberg rusting?

Not true. I oil my guns everytime I touch them, or they'll rust. I believe I might have a high sodium content in my sweat/skin. Heck, I feel I could look at them and they'll rust sometimes.

Man that is crazy. Maybe Manitoba is just a forgiving climate. I am super anal about rust or anything marring my guns. I rarely give them a full out oil. I usually take them out fire them. Maybe after 2-3 times out I will give them a full tear down and cleaning. I seriously have never had a rust problem and that is with 6 shotguns that get shot often.

Why should a store be held responsible for this? A store is in no way responsible for an owner's lack of maintenance.

Believe it or not guns aren't always perfect when they come from the manufacturer. I have turned away more than a couple at Cabelas and Wholesale Sports because of surface rust and defects. I was merely suggesting a possibility.

Nothing that a little "Scotch Brite" can't fix up. It's possible that perhaps the foam in your gun case may have picked some moisture and held it in when the case was closed.

If you stored it in the foam plastic liner and box I can see something like this happening. You want to store it in a place that has at least a minimal airflow around it.

Also Mossberg may not have oiled that particualr part during assembly. Any used OR new gun I have got during my short time in this sport has gotten a cleaning and oil job before going any further. I don't know if it is a requirement for all new guns but I haven't had any nasty surprises thanks to doing this. Besides I like to tinker with mechanical stuff and it gives me a chance to bond with the new toy... :D

Well..... unless you are shooting it in the rain, dropping it in a lake, or drooling on it while shooting, you shouldn't have this problem. I would take it back to where you bought it and ask what their policy is with that.

Unless I am firing in the rain, snow, or where crap will get in my shotgun, I usually won't clean it. I have seen one other 500 with rust like yours. It hadn't been touched for over 10 years. And the surface rust came off pretty easily. In my opinion that shouldn't happen in that short of a time span unless you put water on it instead of oil.

With an 870..... sure I could see it happening.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

G96 is great for taking of light surface rust. Reliable should have some. I use it for all my cleaning and maintaining.

Good luck!

X2 on G96, great product. :)

The past 8 years I have been living within a few KM of a place that rain is measured in Feet per year, so In my experience when it comes to firearms Oil is your friend. :)

My first shotgun was an 870 Express. Similar to the Mossberg 500 in most respects. This is why my second shotgun was an 870 Marine Magnum. I learned very quickly that I am too lazy for super anal care of my firearms. Now I only buy stainless, Special coatings XCR (remington calls Trinite) or Nickel plated. I can ride her hard and put away wet and they come out perfect everytime.

Maintenance sucks.
