Finally got my case of FMJ from CanAmm today, it took them a whole three days, two of which were Saturday and Sunday.
I ordered a box of twenty Hollow Point to find out what all the fuss was about with everyone else wanting HP more than FMJ.
CanAmm replied to my question by saying that many BC lower mainland ranges don't allow FMJ. How do you find the HP shoots
in your SKS? Any difference? How about when hunting, acceptable expansion?

I'm gearing up to take the kids out and test a few fun guns this weekend, SKS is one of them. A while back I picked up a case of HP just in case I want to try it on coyotes, and it was the same price per case as FMJ, but haven't used more than 20-40 rounds in it to date. Seemed pretty much the same from 30m to 60m, haven't had the opportunity to go to 100m or further yet. Expansion on the surplus FMJ isn't great and the few HP rounds I dug out of the dirt didn't look to bad but one just kind of split down the side. Don't know if I'd use it for deer but should be fine for vermin. (Both FMJ and HP are bimetal jacket Norinco/Dominion.)

If I notice any issues this weekend I'll update.

Thanks

Took a buddy shooting and with a FMJ round, he cut the 1/4in steel target hanger in two (by accident of course)... willing to bet the HP will also do this but will expand and not travel as far in the range's backstop.

Actually, I do have the same HP ammo but have never done any testing with it.

Took me a while to find this thread again sorry. We went up on Friday and did some .22LR, 5.56, and 7.62x39 shooting. Unfortunately we got a text at 1:30pm telling us we had a family member in the hospital and we had to pack up in a hurry. We cleaned everything up but the .22LR shells before peeling out so I didn't remember to dig up a HP bullet to check it.

If I remember correctly from an earlier trip to the farm the few I dug out didn't open up very well or much. One split down the side, one lost the jacket, and another looked like it performed perfectly but might have hit a rock in the dirt. If I can get out to the farm again this month I'll try again. The closer spot up north is to busy with hunters at the moment.

I'd use them on coyotes but not sure about deer yet until I can see some better examples.

Thanks for getting back to me.

If I remember correctly, someone actually did a ballistics experiment with these specific hollow points and the results showed little to no expansion.

A guy on youtube has done some testing, usually on metal plates, in a homemade water tank I saw many months back. Probably before I bought the SKS. Good reviews and testing but I only recall the TulAmmo review at the moment. I'm sure if you do a search like "7.62x39 HP Dominion testing site:youtube.com" (no quotations) you'll find something.

I used to think the SKS was a so called "junk gun" due to comments I'd heard from others but after seeing a few and how they are put together I know they are well made. For me it's only a 100m rifle due to accuracy but it's cheap to shoot and ammo is pretty easy to find. Should be a good bush gun equal to my 30-30.

I'll update once I get back out there.

That's pretty much the results I remember.

I looked up the youtube videos again myself just so I could be sure. He found the same results for the most part but also tested Wolf, Brown Bear, Golden Bear, etc, along with SP/HP/FMJ. Interestingly he got different results using a water tank vs ballistic gel. He also did a test using old computer printer paper if I recall right.

Just search his videos for 7.62x39.
