I have a questions for you guys. I am looking for 1 hunting gun, due to limited space and funds. My game will be mostly bear and deer.

What would be a good caliber for me? Couple friends recommended .308 and .270, but I want to know what you guys think?

Also any recommendations on a rifle. Detachable mag and iron sights would be a huge plus.

************

Edit: Budget would be around $1k to $2k for just the rifle. Glass I have a separate budget for. I am looking for a good all rounder and I don't mind spending a little bit for a rifle, I will have for along time.

I am really liking some of the Cz's and Steyrs any canadian shops carry them?

Pretty sure Ardent did a poll for the most common north American cartridge, or something along those lines. I believe it came down to 30.06 as the winner, followed by 300Wm.
Personally I would go 30.06 if I just went with one for deer and bear. Possibly followed by 308?.

laminated t3 in 30 06 with a luep vx2 in 3x9, meopro in 3x9 or what ever else looks good to you.. good solid package that you could hunt with for life. 30 06 is available at any store that sells ammo. pricey stuff for hunting cheap stuff for practice.

Do you care whether it's a push or control feed......................

You trolling here fish face???? LMAO ;)
2k buys aloota gun and a good scope and bullets to feed it and even buy a tag, but the choice is up to you on style of hunting, area of hunting and the size of the deer and bear.
Browning A-bolt in 308 and a Leupold scope with rings found in the EE.
Youll never grow old of this gun.
Tight Groups,
Rob

A nice Swedish Mauser in 6.5X55 from Tradex. Mine is a Husky 46A, cost me 400$ and is all old craftsmanship. Only down side is weight. This is a hefty one.

With your budget there's Tikka, CZ, Sako in 6.5X55.

I am gonna go sideways here, I have changed my views now after owning my BLR.

For some reason when I need to have the gun for just in case and this and that it is the one I grab.

It is 7wsm with a fixed 6X on it , accurate , fast handling , reliable , and enough oommpphh.

This set up in a 7mm-08 or larger will be just lovely.

I'm surprised at my answer but due to handling my buddies synthetic stocked stainless Tikka T3 Lites and how accurately they shoot I have to go with recommending one of them.

The Browning X-Bolt seems to have a lot of fans these days. c/w a detach mag. I would check out one of those in 270, 308 or 30/06.

Forget about the iron sights. Buy a very good scope and you won't need them for back-up. A low powered variable (2-7) is perfect for almost anything.
