1 MOA Challenge 2013

The gun an the barrel go to the gunsmith Monday, and I have found 300 80gr vlds locally (anything heavier in sierra is going to be a long wait) so if I can find a good load within my current limited reloading supplies I will be out a lot more often.

The 1moa challenge was great, and once my friend finally starts developing a load for his gun he will attempt it as well!

While F Class does not have a rule excluding semi autos from competition, it does state that the rifle must be loaded with only single rounds. Mags can be used but only one round may be loaded into the mag. F/TR rules also state that a bipod or bipod and sling may be used in conjuction with a rear bag that is not attached to the bipod. If you want to use your pack as a rear bag, I don't see a problem.

I take it muzzle brake are out then as well? I'd like to come out for some of these matches and I know other guys that would as well however 1 round in the mag, no muzzle brakes and other rules (front rests) would prevent us from attending.

I couldnt make the 800km drive so i went out to the farm and tried it today just for schits and gigs. 2.4 in 10 shot group @ 300m on the first try. Ill give all the credit to the rifle.

F/TR rules are what they are. These same rules are followed in the Canada, UK, USA, Aus, NZ, SA, EU and every other country that shoots F/TR under ICFRA rules. Muzzle brakes are not allowed in any TR-F/TR or F Class competitions. Your more than welcome to come out and shoot any way you want, just not under the 1 MOA Challenge.

swissinn, nice shooting please give the details of your equipment and load.

I"m shooting a North Shore Barrels built .300 Lapua Magnum (I know, at 300m its basically cheating). Has a Stiller Tac. 338 action, Broughton 5c 10 twist bbl. Mcmillan fully adjustable A5 stock. 10oz timney or jewell trigger( can't remember ) My loads were 225gr Hornady HPBT on Lapua Brass and Winchester Large Rifle Magnum Primers. 85 grains of Vihtavouri N570. Havent chronied these but best estimate is 2950 fps. Rifle weighs 20lbs and i was using a Harris bi-pod and a rear shooting sock. It has a muzzle brake on it but i take it off because i want to compete with this rifle someday. Recoil is stiff but not horrible.
I took a pic of the group and sent it to DG Photography. Maybe he'll post it for us!

Your rifle is up in the F-Open class. 1.8 lbs pounds too heavy for F/TR. I have a hacksaw that I bring to the range and can assist you in shedding that extra rifle weight if you are interested:p Sounds like a nice rig and would be very competitive is F-Open. You should think about shooting the ORA Annual Matches in Aug at CFB Borden.

Do u at least have a lee chamfer tool to deburr the barrel after you hack it off lol. There is a pic of the rifle in the "anyone familiar with .300 Lapua Magnum" thread. Yes i will be trying my hand at F open soon i hope. Its a straight shooter for sure.

Rifle is a Stiller TAC -338 Single shot Broughton barrel 29" or so 5c barrel McMillan A-5 SS stock trigger
is Rifle Basix 8 oz

This rifle was built at North Shore Barrels the Barrel Pimp was teaching me how to chamber
and build a rifle. Not everyday a gunsmith offers to do this thanks Sean! Here is a photo of me
shooting 5 round groups at 300m trying a load out the first group
On the lower left was very clean barrel that needed shooting in the
3 other groups were shot with FL resize plus neck sized with wrong
bushing using 94 grains of Retumbo under 175 Sierra MKs Federal
GMM LR Magnum primers.

Gotcha.

It was just that you seemed to put out the challenge to all those claiming to shoot under 1 moa, but then just limited it to narrow field of who could participate.

Here we go again for 2013. Same rules as last year.

I see a lot of people on here claiming to have 1/4 or 1/2 MOA rifles.

Place is Cedar Springs Rifle Range. The range is 300m. Shooting is all done prone under current ORA/DCRA, F/TR Class or F(F)actory rules....snip...

Gotcha.

It was just that you seemed to put out the challenge to all those claiming to shoot under 1 moa, but then just limited it to narrow field of who could participate.

By my reading, maynard was pretty wide-open and permissive in the kinds of rifles allowable and the manner of shooting permitted.

I haven't read the ORA rules for a while but F(Factory) probably covers the vast majority of factory rifles out there. The only rifles likely to be excluded are those that the ORA is not permitted to fire at Cedar Springs (I'm not sure if 338 Lapua is in or out but it might be out).

Muzzle brakes are excluded because of a real or perceived interference with other shooters on the range (personally, I don't think they should be prohibited from the TR and F-Class rules, but unless and until we change that rule they are prohibited, so we have to live with that as best we can). Can you you could take it off or cover it up?

Manner of shooting is anything within F-Class rules, which while not completely unlimited is pretty darn generous. For example a bipod and rear bag is permitted (and this allows for *extremely* steady shooting). Your request to shoot using an equipment bag as a front support is technically illegal however it is likely to handicap you, a bipod would be much steadier (if I was running the Challenge and it was my money at stake, I'd be inclined to offer you a bipod if you wanted but allow you to shoot in the manner you suggest, if you wished).

I don't see why single loading would be a problem. For example with an AR-15, the bolt locks back on an empty mag. You can chuck one round in and hit the bolt release to chamber it. Fire the shot, your empty is ejected and your bolt locked back ready for you to load the next one.

Here is a bigger picture of the soap barrel at least we know
swissin is serious about staying clean or maybe he has that
whole Costco bulk buying OCD thing going on! Perhaps he likes
to blow bubbles lol!

Under current Canadian F Class rules, shooting is done 3 to a target with alternate shots. This could mean that you shoot one shot every 2-3 minutes. I am allowing this challenge to be shot under US or Assie rules that allows single string shooting with each shot indicated. I am not getting into what is allowed in precision (sniper) matches or what is allowed in bench rest matches. I am looking to recruit new shooters to F Class and get people involved by shooting factory rifles that they aready own (note I am not an F Class shooter, I shoot TR with iron sights). I am not looking to turn this into an equipment race.

I must keep within the the safety template of the DND range that we shoot on, and follow the Range Standng Orders set down by the DND. These are not up to debate.

By laying down some limitations (relaxed F Class F/TR rules) this allows more people to shot the rifles they have, without dropping 4-5K to play the game. With my money at stake all I can say is, "my sandbox, my rules".

Well like maynard said, we have our second winner for the MOA challenge for 2013. Congratulations to Tyson (CGN handle unknown). He was sporting a Rem 700 XCR Tactical? in 308 Win. His fuel win the challenge was 308 Win Hornady Zombie (out of the box factory) ammo. Here are a couple of pictures with the winning target and rifle. Congrats again to Tyson. It's always nice to see money coming out of maynard's wallet .

P.S. No Zombies were harm during this challenge :(.

Thanks for hosting guys, I had a good day! You have a good group of people there.

It's a 700P LTR with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14 x40 and a Caldwell AR bipod.

So there you have it guys, stock rifle and factory ammo. It can be done at 300m. So as you can see you don't need a $4000 rifle with a $2500 scope.
