Until Grouse season in Ontario opens :dancingbanana:

I love going out there in the bush by myself and being one with nature. So relaxing and rewarding.

How are things looking for you guys, seeing lots of them ditch chickens puttering about?

I havent really had much time this year to scout about, but hoping that this season will be as good, if not better then last.

We had a real cool and rainy spring, and most of the summer was rain and overcast nearly every day. Just now we are having good straight weeks of sun and warmth.

With that said. How about for the new hunters reading this thread that we give a little info on grouse and what times are good, where to find them etc etc so the new hunters have something to go by.

I cant wait to get out there :D

Well waterfowl opens Monday. I never bought my stamp yet, but I'm still going Monday night...I'm teaching a new hunter the ropes and we'll be sitting on a pond till dark. The Remington is cleaned and ready to roar in anger again. About a week or so after that I'll be walking the mountain trails with my side by side. I was down there on the weekend and saw alot of spruce and ruffed grouse. I'm looking foward to that the most I think, cause now I can hunt every Sunday down there. I work every other Saturday so that used to bugger me up.

I find grouse in open clearings, though I've bumped them on the edges of trails many times before. I look for them around the edges of open patches surrounded by thick timber. Once I find a spot, I'll walk around and continue down the path. I find spruce grouse more in areas with downed tree's and branches, and more ruffed in the tree's and areas with tall grass. Pheasant is another story. I'm not a good ditch parrot hunter and I'll admit that, though I do shoot the odd one. They drive me nuts. I don't have a dog yet, (But one day that will change) so I put alot of miles on my boots. I flush the odd bird from narrow stretches of brushy cover, or from tall grass along ditches. Some spots I can 'stalk' them if you know where they are. One place I'm known to wander around has a small lake. While walking I occasionally hear a rooster blabing by the water. I'll sneak around as quiet as I can and then move upwind towards him so he can't hear me coming. Then when I get to the spot where I thought he was I'll rush the cover. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The problem with pheasant is they have learned running birds don't get shot. They will run faster scared than I can angry and if given the chance to dodge left or right. or fly, they'll take the former. And without a dog it can be a futile Evening, but fun none the less.

I prefer #6 shot for almost all my bird hunting, except I use BB shot for ducks and geese. My pump gun has a modifed choke which is good for nearly all, and my double has a full barrel by default. I would like to ream it out to a modified, but common sense tells me to leave it alone. I have another pump gun that has a full choke, but it never leaves the house anymore. I found modified does it all pretty well. Have fun.

Most of Manitoba saw a really wet and cool spring so that doesn't bode well for this fall. Grouse numbers seem to be a way down in our neck of the woods and any birds around will be wiser adult birds. I like walking old logging roads after the leaves are down. Gives you a chance to see or hear birds, and as a bonus it gets your legs in shape for deer season. It's also a nice way to do some pre-season scouting.

Same here Big Game, cold and rainy. Although my brother, which is into Geo work in the bush says he has never seen so many grouse this year then last. Although I havent seen that many myself. I am going to go hunt the spots that he worked on and see what goes.

Some good tips there Pharaoh2 ;)

Can't wait myself, I am forever grateful I live in a place where I can walk out my door and hunt birds in my backyard. Been working on finishing my kitchen reno so I can get into the bush. My go to gun is a 870 wingmaster - modified choke with light 6 or 7 1/2 loads.
Shoot straight and have fun
Andy
PS my wife has a great grouse(partridge) recipe in a cream sauce I'll see if she'll let me post it

Very true ,but I think I`ll do alright this year. The brother & I are heading to our favorite spot next week (took the week off) and as season starts on the 19th ,we`ll start off with a bunch of fishing at several lakes in the area.On opening day of Grouse ,we have all our usual trails planned out as well as a few new spots we scouted out last October. While out ,I have some whitetail areas I want to check up on and do more scouting.I also plan on a few delicious breasts of goose this fall, as the Canadas are starting to stage in many ares where I`m working(which is also close to my hunting grounds)

We are also taking another week off in early October for more grouse and some trout /flyfishing in my new float tube.

Brothers ,I can hardly wait for my most favorite season !!

Grouse #'s here seem to be way up, still flushing families of birds(4-6) at a time as of yesterday. Can't wait to give the Citori some fresh air....also saw some Hun. partridge this spring, 1st in along time.

ampegor.

I am interested to see that recipe if your wife is willing to share :D

I havent seen any families yet.. but then again I havent really been out there scouting! So much stuff on the go that I haven't even really done much shooting at all this year :eek:O

BlackBrant, mmhmm my favourite season as well :D cant wait either!

I just picked up a new GPS so I am going to probably take a ride on the ATV one of these days and mark some good spots that I find to come back to on the 15th :D

1 more day :D

monday is supposed to be partly cloudy here with only a 10% chance of rain. Got the Remmy all cleaned up and ready to hit the woods.

What time do you guys usually head out in the AM? crack of dawn? wait till the sun is up a bit?

As for me.. I usually head out around 7 and get to my spot around 7:30ish.

We still have a week to wait but if the weather doesn't smarten up it will be tough. Yesterday my stepson and I were on a goose hunt and were nearly carried away by the mosquitos. Friends of ours out in the marsh for ducks packed up after 20 minutes they were so bad. Long range forecast is calling for mid 20's all week, so next weekend cvould be brutal again. We need a good frost!!!!!

Sorry to hear that :(

It is a rainy, cool day here today. Currently 55F. Tomorrow high of 56F partly cloudy. Hoping to bag my limit tomorrow :D

I'll be bringing my father with me, something we always do together, especially on opening day :)
