Hey Folks,

Looking to replace the STI Recoil Master system in my .40 Sentry with a conventional guide rod and recoil spring setup.

I was wondering what the merits/benefits of having a 1 or 2 piece guide-rod are? Is a 2 piece rod just for ease of assembly/disassembly or is there more to it that?

Additionally, does anyone have any specific brand recommendations for a new guide rod and spring?

I didnt have much luck with the 2 piece guide rod,it was always unscrewing when shooting.The one piece really isnt hard to field strip and I have them in all my 1911s.I like the EGW or SVI units with Woolf springs,but Im sure there are others that will work just as well.Tungsten rods are nice if you want a bit of extra weight up front on the gun,but they do have a reputation for breaking(and they are super expensive)
 
on the topic of guide rods is there anything to be gained with the fill length rod vs the original short one?

ive noticed my last 2 1911 purchases both had full length rods which makes disassemble a bit more of a pain when new.
just wonder if there is any actual improvement with the full length rod that makes it more desirable.

there's nothing to gain by having a full length guide rod in a 1911 except added weight.....there's nothing to lose too. it's like having a fifth wheel, it's not going to hurt but it's not really doing anything
 
I'd keep the recoil master but if you absolutely want the rod and spring, get the single full length guide rod. The 2 peice guide rod is nothing but trouble.
 
EGW - 1 piece.

i prefer tungsten, but I'm trying to maximize the potential of my 1911 for competition. My "regular" 1911s all have straight stainless guide rods.

ISMI springs are my favorite, Wolff is #2.

it lets you easily remove the top end of your 1911 without having to take any of it apart, which is the reason I use them
 
I wondered when the ole 1 pce vs 2 pce guide rod in a 1911 discussion would appear again on this page.

I used red locktite on the one in my Spartan IV. It's one piece now.

They do seem to be an answer to an unasked question.

Unless the question was "how do I make my 1911 even more heavy?"
