Hey guys so I got back after shooting my 10/22 (prone and at 50 yards) and I cant seem to get better than a 3 inch group with Irons. How are you guys doing with your 10/22?

Well, you don't need a Leupold for 50 yds.
A Tasco 24X @ $120 will do the best out of a 10/22.

But anyway, back to irons:
First, make sure your gun is able to do better than 3" @ 50yds.
Borrow a scope and shoot with it.
If it does 1", then it's not the gun, it's you.

Improve your technique (practice and practice again).
I am not good at teaching you a good irons technique,
since I stopped shooting irons many years ago.
I try to re-learn using target sights (Lyman type).

PS Aftermarket irons might help (Tech Sights or Williams).
Also, a lighter trigger and an aftermarket barrel.

There are a bunch of other options out there besides Leupold. ;) Put a cheap scope on it and you'll drop that group to 1".

*Wow 2 people beat me to it. :D*

The irons on your 10/22 aren't the most precise setup... they're good enough for whackin' gophers at 25 yards, but shooting bullseyes at 50 would probably be a stretch. Buy or borrow a scope and see if you can do better, i'm fairly sure you can.

I enjoy shooting iron sights too, I'm debating on trying a williams peep setup.

The trigger may be throwing you off, if it's a factory ruger setup.

Let us know how things turn out.

Get the trigger done. It's a must for the 10/22. The stock and even the "target" trigger are too heavy.

When you try it out with a scope. Do an ammo test. Try all the usual brands, and also try a few match grade such as Lapua Superclub. You might be pleasantly surprised. If nothing else it'll tell you what the rifle is capable of. when you go back to iron sights at least you'll know if it's the rifle/ammo and what they are capable of accuracy wise.

Thanks guys I think ill save up for a scope and try to trim my trigger. It might take me a few month though *cough year *cough with school and all

We have 2 Ruger 10/22 rifles, both have Bushnell "Dusk to Dawn" 4-16x40mm scopes with the adjustable objective which allows us to set the paralax for 50 meters... Most of our 22 shooting is 50m & closer. 4 power is plenty of magnification at close ranges & the 16 power allows plinking 'up close' at the range.

The Dusk to Dawn scope is okay & a decent price point to put on the Ruger 10/22.

Cheers
Jay

The barrel must count for something i have 2 wooden stock regulars 10-22 and they are fair as accuracy with a scope but my sr-22 is without modification very accurate with that thick bull barrel with any ammo and surprisingly it shot CCI Stinger in a cluster at 100 metres, my other 10-22 no more than 3 inch at 50 metres for the CCI, the barrel could be the difference... JP.

I use cci stingers in my sr also with great success most everything else is so so but the stingers are spot on everytime

True it is with the CCI Stinger that the sr-22 really shine, never tought i would buy the Stinger by the brick... JP.

So I am going to basspro for some ammo tmr I think I am going to pick up a brick of CCI. I am currently using Winchester wildcats ( not the greatest ammo IMO)
