I want a 10/22. I don't have a semi-auto 22...so I want a 10/22.

But I know myself well enough to know I would have upgrade-itis as soon as I bought a basic 10/22, and I'd probably dump hundreds (thousands?) into it over the next few years tweaking.

So those of you who have been there done that...what do you recommend?

A Volquartsen, and call it good? Buy a bunch of Kidd parts? Are there any Ruger factory models that get me to reliable sub MOA?

The rifle will do split duty between the range (where I'm picky) and the gopher fields (where I need to out-shoot my brother in law ;)), so I need a balance...and so far the Volquartsen VM-22 checks the boxes (https://volquartsen.com/inventory_configurations/1475)...but it's spendy.

$2K on a rifle is the ceiling...my question is: can I get 90% of the way there by buying a magpul hunter stock and some bits for a lot less?

If you had $2K to spend, a desire to shoot well at the range, and a brother-in-law that needs to be out-shot this gopher season....what 10/22 would you get?

What does your brother in law shoot? :)

Anything he aims at. ;) He's a freaking savant with a bolt gun in a gopher field (CZs mostly). My goal is to blow my tax return on a rifle that allows me to use my "90% as good accuracy" with a crap-ton of lead thrown at gophers way faster with a semi-auto. ;)

Very much a first-world problem....but it's the little things in life. ;)

+1 Dlask

I bought the parts separately tho over time and built it myself, but mine is basically a dlask custom build. Can shoot the nuts off a mosquito at 50 yards I am very happy with it.

Buy a “ready” built. If you buy cheap you will go down “the rabbit hole” and probably cost you more for parts and the loss of fun time

I say depends of what you're looking for.. I always wanted a walnut stock on a 1022 and after trying to find them (only boyds have them as Ruger doesnt sell them to Canada) I had to buy the 1022 deluxe and really like it, of course its not a dlask and I changed the hammer for a volkartsen and its awesome now.. in the future I might replace the complete bolt but then I would be very satisfied.. I had a dlask in the past with a 12" barrel, it was flawless but found the regular barrels way too heavy unless you bench shoot only..

Dlask with Kidd ultralight would be awesome too, have fun !

For rimfires, especially semis, barrels and chambers is everything to performance. Got some specs set up to help the 10/22 be very accurate out to 400+yds.

For the rest of the rifle, it is appearance so build whatever you prefer.

Barrel, bedding and ammo will determine your outcome...
