10/22 advice for an obsessive compulsive bolt guy

Well if your buddies did mods to their 10/22s and went back to original, they either bought junk, or probably shouldn't be playin gunsmith! If they lost accuracy and bought quality components there are only two reasons for accuracy loss. 1 is they shouldn't be playin gunsmith and 2 which is probably the case, they cant shoot.

Yep... Bedding and proper support is the #1 problem area that 'homesmiths' may not understand or do properly. For the 10/22s I just put together for team mates, I had to do the bedding in 3 steps with intermediate mods in between. That is a bunch of work but the results are excellent.

The best parts in the world rattling around, are not going to lead to a positive outcome.

2nd most common problem is poor ammo choice. I see this time again, bulk HV ammo being run through a match barrel/chamber and getting horrid results. Understand that many true match setups are designed to run upper grade match ammo... read that as expensive... and then the right type of match ammo.

So a homebuild that is not adequately assembled, coupled with the wrong ammo can easily lead to results worst then a factory rifle....

Just wondering if anyone has bothered to check the results on Practiscore from last year. I did and apparently there is a 10/22 platform gun that seemed to EXCEL. Like Forest Gump said "THATS ALL I GOT TO SAY ABOUT THAT" Proof is in the pudding. Put up or shut up. Talk is just that TALK. Results need no conversation, THEYRE SELF EXPLANATORY. Stay safe everyone

Again the barrel was not a fast twist. The rifle was assembled correctly with Dlask and Kidd components. I originally swapped barrels for weight savings but also got improved accuracy. The Kidd barrel shoots better with pretty much any ammunition I tried-expensive stuff and cheap stuff.

I’m not sure why you keep bringing up CRPS. The OP didn’t say anything about CRPS. Kidd doesn’t produce a fast twist so I don’t think it would be ideal for that purpose.

I wouldn’t buy another McGowen after trying an alternative. The extra 100$ on the Kidd was money well spent. I also wouldn’t expect Bits of Pieces to warranty it. Thats not a reasonable thing to expect and I have nothing against Bits of Pieces.

To claim that you would have warrantied the barrel is absurd. As I’ve said before its dishonest sales tactics.

OP, you either love Ruger 10/22 rifles or you hate them.

I've sold every single one of them I've ever owned. Mind you the same can be said for almost every semi auto 22 rimfire rifle I've owned.

They can be a lot of fun and with a lot of time, work, money, after market barrels, etc can be made to shoot acceptably well. If you're an accuracy freak, stick with your bolt action rimfire rifles.

Just IMHO.

UPDATE: Finally had a chance to take it for a spin!

Finally got a chance to get the rifle on a bench and try for some groups. Seemed to like SK Rifle Match the most, and the best group (of 6 total attempts--didn't have a ton of time) was .49" at 55 yards (50 meters, eh), for 0.85 MOA.

For a super windy day and my first time on the bench with it, I'm pleased!

Cool! I got a Dlask with the same barrel (16.5" carbon fiber wrapped) about a week ago and have had similar results - sub MOA at 50 and 100m with ammo it likes, but not too much tighter than MOA. Mine did good with the SK Rifle Match, but you might want to try Lapua Center-X and Midas+ if you haven't already. Eley Sport and Contact also performed well for me.

Good to know! Amazing how different ammo performs from the same rifle, on the same day. CCI Velocitor is my usual gopher load, but out of the Dlask it looks like a shotgun blast on the paper! 1.5-2" @ 55 yards!
