10/22 advice for an obsessive compulsive bolt guy

If you got the McGowen barrel from me, I would definitely take care of any barrel that didn't shoot well. PM or email to discuss. One of the specs I offer is specific to match ammo suitable for very LR shooting. That spec would not work well with bulk HV ammo.... there is another spec for that type of application.

The feedback I have received has been very positive...

Let me know if I can help

Happy Easter.
Jerry

The issue is post #26. Not only does Jerry imply that his McGowen barrels are as good as Kidd, but claims he would do something if his McGowen wasn’t as good. Nobody would warranty a McGowen because its not as good as a Kidd or GM.

That’s dishonest sales tactics plain and simple.

I fail to see any of that in post #26 quoted above.

Get the Kidd barrel. Any model or second on the list a volquartsen barrel. Plus a Kidd or vquartsen machined bolt assembly. Two upgrades that’ll do it for the 10/22. A decent trigger will help too

I want a 10/22. I don't have a semi-auto 22...so I want a 10/22.

But I know myself well enough to know I would have upgrade-itis as soon as I bought a basic 10/22, and I'd probably dump hundreds (thousands?) into it over the next few years tweaking.

So those of you who have been there done that...what do you recommend?

A Volquartsen, and call it good? Buy a bunch of Kidd parts? Are there any Ruger factory models that get me to reliable sub MOA?

The rifle will do split duty between the range (where I'm picky) and the gopher fields (where I need to out-shoot my brother in law ;)), so I need a balance...and so far the Volquartsen VM-22 checks the boxes (https://volquartsen.com/inventory_configurations/1475)...but it's spendy.

$2K on a rifle is the ceiling...my question is: can I get 90% of the way there by buying a magpul hunter stock and some bits for a lot less?

If you had $2K to spend, a desire to shoot well at the range, and a brother-in-law that needs to be out-shot this gopher season....what 10/22 would you get?

I know several people who own 10/22 who’ve done upgrades, now if you plan on doing upgrades spend the big bucks, other then trigger upgrades, anyone I know who’s done mods to their 10/22 have went back to stock, because the loss of accuracy, that being said, if you have the$$$ go volquartsen, expensive but said to have near or same accuracy as Anschutz bolt action rifles!

I saw you in the 1/2" at 50 yards all day thread which adds some credibility. Did you stick with one of the Dlask barrels?

No, KIDD Match Trigger and KIDD Match bull barrel, Victor company Titan 10/22 stock. DLASK Everything else.

I do remember it was still not easy. hand fed single shot bolts are much easier to do this with from my experience.

I spent right around 1600 I think for the rifle. You could get two 455's for that price and they would not take the same amount of tinkering I bet.

It was very picky with ammo. I played with the torque on the stock, also tried the DLASK spring kit.

I only id the semi auto thing as a challenge for myself.

Due to current situation I only have my dads old gopher 22... Once I am in a spot to shoot again ill be getting a bench rest anny…

Brendan, I still have your Dlask/Kidd rifle & it is performing well. :)

Op here - My upgraded Dlask TUF 22 arrived today, and short of having anywhere to shoot it right now, it rocks!

Will post a range/gopher hunt report as soon as one of them happens!

Well if your buddies did mods to their 10/22s and went back to original, they either bought junk, or probably shouldn't be playin gunsmith! If they lost accuracy and bought quality components there are only two reasons for accuracy loss. 1 is they shouldn't be playin gunsmith and 2 which is probably the case, they cant shoot. For the record I have a VQ gun and its accurate and the machinig is also second to none, however its not as accurate as the three Dlask guns I have and not nearly as accurate as my Dlask receiver with Kidd everything else. My most accurate is a Dlask receiver with McGowan barrel and Dlask bolt and Kidd everything else in 17 Mach2.
