Hey, i have done many 10-22 auto bolt release in the past 4 years (10+ counting 4 of my 10-22s and doing 6-7 for people at the range)
I just took in another 10-22 from someone at the range to get this done for him, i do the job as usual, doesn't work.
He has an old ruger, aluminium trigger group housing, even the bolt cuts aren't the same.

I even took the trigger group from my 50th anniversary 10-22 i use regularly, doesn't auto bolt release in his action.
Put it back in my action, works again.

What am i missing?

Are there any burrs, or rough edges on the release or on the inside of the metal trigger group housing.
I had to polish my bolt releases sharp edges (stamped part). It was also quite tight in the trigger group,
so I buffed off the releases flats with a fiber buffing wheel. It now works excellent. You might try polishing the inside
of the trigger group housing where the bolt release touches for possible slag, or marks from the mold.
I also noticed that the mag release plunger was rubbing against the bolt release. I radiused the offending
corner of the bolt release while buffing. I was ready to buff the diameter of the plunger itself, but this was not necessary.
I don`t know much, but these are my thoughts on trying to help you.

Hate to say but what is the real advantage to the auto bolt release? Dont mean to come down on you but with a bit of practice it becomes second nature to release the bolt un modified even under stress. I actually get a kick lending it to 10/22 novices now and explaining how to do it but they never get the hang of it!

Ive had carbines with this mod in the past and went back......Flame on!

To answer your question though i did it with an old model, make sure there is a bit of a radius at the top and it should work. The IBOK by Iwoegen is worth looking up. Pm me your email i may still have it on my puter

To me, this is one of the main reasons for doing it. One less step to teach the exited newbies.
The other is the quick convenience of having that step removed. IMOHO I like it better that way. I was thinking it should be done that way from the factory, They probably have a million of them stamped ahead, and changing the tool & dies would cost them money.
Some young fells just think It`s ``cool``.

Finally found the culprit
Aftermarket mag release lever is too fat and binding with the bolt release lever.
Owner previously complained that lever was difficult to operate.
Installing my oem, newer mag release solved everything.
So it will either end up with filing mag release in a specific spot or buying a new one, owner will decide
Cheers

Same reason I don't ride a horse 42km to work everyday... cause its easier and much nicer.

Thanks
It did start with some polishing as you had suggested.
Bolt release plate was rubbing against mag latch , after i did polish for clearance that’s where i noticed binding with actual mag release lever.

good topic gents!
i had the exact problem with 6 RIA clones i picked up for myself and a bunch of coworkers.
the RIA stuff seemed to be a lot thicker and the bold release mod only worked in a couple of them.
took me a while but i started by smoothing everything out then flat sanding the plate to thin it up a but then i finally realized it was the mag release that was thick and causing the problem.
thinned it down a hair and they all have run like butter since.

and who says tighter is better!
