Ive had mixed results with all of my 10/22 rifles, from over the years. Some have shot flawless, some malfunction once per magazine. All of the ones that had feeding/extraction problems, were just tempermental with different ammo. Once I found the type of ammo it prefers, then no problems. One thing that keeps me buying them, is that if I want it to work perfect with any ammo, then its cheap to upgrade the extractor, and do some minor mods, then it works perfect, all the time, with any ammo.
You would think that by now, Ruger would just use a volquarsten extractor or similar copy made by Ruger, because it would basically solve most problems on the occasional tempermental 10/22.
Even though the 10/22 is a entry level .22lr, they all should feed/extract perfect, from the box, and if a simple extractor upgrade is all that needs to be changed, or improved, then Ruger should fix it at the factory, and not expect 1 out of 10 owners to replace a brand new extractor.....but its still not as bad as what remington 597 owners deal with.
My conclusion on 10/22 rifles is, if I end up with a finicky tempermental 10/22, then it can be easily made to operate perfect just by changing the extractor, and then I polish a few parts, and it feeds and extracts anything, all the time, including cheap junk ammo, or subsonics....If it cost me alot of money, then I wouldnt keep buying them, but I wont lose sleep over a $20 extractor, and minor work, to have the best semi auto .22lr rifle IMHO.
