10/22 barrel sag?

I am thinking of modding-up my 10/22 and a new stock and heavy barrel are definitely the first 2 mods I have planned. But I have been told to be cautious about the stock and to avoid any stock that is designed to float the barrel. According to what I was told, the design of the 10/22 doesn't lend itself well to floating a barrel and the barrel will tend to sag.

Any truth to this? Have you guys head this before?:confused:
 
Yep I have heard about this and I actually suffer from barrel droop myself on my 10/22 custom build. There are a few options: buy a skeeter v-block with built in barrel droop compensator screw or put a pressure pad in the barrel channel.
My barrel drooped to the point where I would run out of elevation on my scope when sighting it in at 50 yards. A simple small piece of foam placed in the barrel channel about an inch form then end of the stock solve it.

You can't even notice it just by looking at it.

Heard of it, but it's nothing bedding the first couple of inches can't fix. Easier yet is to install the VQ bedding kit. It comes with rubber inserts that you attach to the end of your stock so it applies upward pressure to the barrel. The only other option is to install a Gunsmithers Block. It replaces the original V-block with one that has a set screw in the middle to raise/support the barrel.
 
This is a lot less common than you would think. Go ahead and buy a bull barrel free float it and see what happens. Mine is fine :) - if you suffer from droop it's a relatively easy fix. Go to rimfire central.com and do a search in the barrels section. This topic is discussed at length. There are pics on how to shim the barrel to eliminate droop etc...pics on how to alter your own v-block and links to aftermarket v-blocks....
 
Barrel Drop...

I have not had a problem with mine either... I did some searching and it does not happen with all of them... if it is a problem fix it, otherwise shoot and enjoy your setup/rifle might not suffer from that problem... mine doesnt and until it does I am not fixing it...

There is an old saying... If it aint broke dont fix it.

Having said that, HawkTech Arms has a replacement "RT V-Block" for $24 and if I were making a 10/22 I would put one into the build. Mine is already redone and works great and I am not taking it appart to add that in now.
 
Does it have something to do with a physically heavier barrel because it's a bull barrel? I have the 10/22RR and it has a 20" standard barrel free floated from the factory.
 
Thanks for the help, guys. Now a bigger question I'm asking myself is should I spend 3 or 4 hundred dollars modding my 10/22, or should I just sell it in the EE and, for about the same investment, buy a Remington 597 Target, a handful of mags and a crapload of ammo?:confused:
 
I just installed a 18" heavy on my 10/22. It went in very tight. No room for play or droop. Just bed the first 3 inches infront of the reciever. If you're floating the barrel you'll have to do this anyway because you need this pressure point.
