I am just looking for someone to enlighten me on barrels. I have been doing some reading, and it appears there are lots of different barrels available for my 10/22. I would like to know what makes one barrel more accurate than another, it is all in the rifling?? What does fluting the barrel actually do to the bullet?? Any and all info on barrels is quite appreciated. thanx.

Depends on what you are going to using the barrel for.
Dedicated Target Rifle? Hunting? Both?
DLASK makes a great all around barrel.
Mystic Precision also sells Mcgowen and Shilen barrels if your into match shooting.
There are also KIDD?? Green Mountain to name a couple others.
As for accuracy, I believe it all comes down to the type of chamber on the barrel, some are tighter than others enabling you to use match grade ammo for better accuracy and others are larger for the use of bulk ammo for general plinking and hunting.
Fluting doesn't do anything for the accuracy imho. It does take some weight off a bit, and enables cooling of the barrel but unless your shooting streams of lead, then the barrel doesn't heat up that much anyways.

im turning my 10/22 into a dedicated grouse/small game sniper rig currently(its previous incarnation was a marauder). Can someone tell me what bull barrel i should be looking at for that?
I was looking at the tactical solutions in black but wanstalls doesnt have any right now, but im wondering how durable they would be since they are mostly aluminum. i have considered green mountain, shilen,
and dlask, but was hoping for something a little more light weight, that is still durable. If there is anyone who has owned all these barrels and can speak of their opinion of what they prefer, especially in the
accuracy deparment, it would be appreciated.

I have shot both the Kidd barrel and the Dlask extreme barrel. Both will do under an inch at 100 yds, with ammunition the barrel likes. Both will hit golf balls at 200 yds if you read the wind properly.

Depending on where you live, you may want to reconsider that. Check the regulations.
In BC, for example, IIRC, you cannot hunt with guns with a barrel shorter than 12.5"
as they are considered handguns.
I've used them all... can't go wrong with Dlask... I have many Dlask barrels and they have all proven to be accurate, with excellent fit and finish... the sporter chamber functions well with CCI SV and Mini-Mag HP's... which covers paper and game... we take game with ours also.

I myself have heard/read good things about dlask also but if you want the most accurate barrel you can buy go for a kidd or fedderson ! I did my research and found the reviews of the fedderson to be as good or better than a kidd ! I'm importing one as we speak and will put up a review to let everyone know how it goes ! But if you don't want to wait I'd go with the dlask only thing I've heard is they seem to have a relatively tight chamber that might cause fte's with certain ammo !
I have owned and tested both Kidd and Fedderson barrels as well as GM, ERS, WP, TS, RT, Shilen etc... (disremembering some here)... Dlask barrels are giving up nothing to these in either quality or functionality or accuracy... ANY match chamber is going to have function issues with some ammo... trust me, I have tuned many match chambers including from Kidd and Fed... tight chambers are accurate but ALSO finicky as to ammo and cleaning... the reason Ruger makes a sloppy action and chamber is so that it will fire everything out there, run dirty and not be finicky for the uninformed masses... they do this intentionally and at the cost of accuracy... that is why there are so many shooters accurizing their 10/22's, this is probably why YOU are buying another barrel... 10/22's do need accurizing badly. Joe Dlask is a good guy to deal with and is very concerned and diligent about quality and accuracy as well as CS, I am very satisfied with his products. Good luck with your Fedderson, Fred makes a good barrel... quirky guy.

This is rimfire... not centerfire... any legal non-restricted weapon is eligible to hunt with... this means 26"+ OAL regardless of barrel length... and centerfires that are OEM factory configuration with under 18" barrels (NOT cut-off to under 18") are legal to hunt with also... there are many of these. Firearms laws are Federally regulated... Hunting is provincially regulated... each province is its own entity.
