10/22, Broken barrel clamp

Last week I went out to shoot some paper after seeing some very impressive
scores on this site. My results were not good. I may as well have used
buck shot becouse it would have looked the same. After I took things
apart I found the the small clamp, which holds the barrel in place, was loose.
So I tightened it... and it broke in two. This probably does't help the accuacy
too much. It's not hard to make a new one so I'll be back in business be long.

if your taklnig about the barrel band at the stock end ......... DONT REPLACE IT

thats one of the first steps to building an ultimate 10/22

rip off that band (you already did) as it interferes with harmonics... tons of folks here and on rimfirecentral.com willl tell you this.

10/22's arent known for amazing accuracy when stock, theyre loved becasue they can be personalized in so many different ways.

If you want nice accuracy, i suggest getting an aftermarket barrel ( I personally love green mountain barrels)

my 80 dollar GM barrel (stainless, bull) gets me almost same hole groups at 25 yds, 1/2" at 50 kinds of groups.

helll, seeing how your close to london (where i am) i can always give you a hand or 2 about the 10/22... we can go shoot mine if you want to test stuff out

I was refering to the small v-block which holds the barrel int the
reciever. This rifle at one time was giving me .300" groups @50 yds
with peep sights. Now that I'm thinking about it, I rememer it losing
some of it's charm in the later part of the year in '04.
I was just wondering if this is a common failure of this model.

Yep, its a very common problem. There are places where you can get others so no need to worry. Here is one that is pretty cool. I have a barrel droop screw build in.

How do you know when your barel is sqaure to the reciever....is it easy to see?....Or do you just insert the barrel and and put tension or slight pressure on the "droop" screw....helluva an idea none the less

It is easy to make sure sure the barrel is square in the receiver. The v-block will only go on when it is.

The droop screw is mainly designed for heavy barrels. Sometimes one will run out of elevation on their scope due to barrel droop and this screw helps. Simply give it a few turns and it should help bring up POI back up.
