Im new to this so be patient with me . I want to build a 10/22 for varmint shooting . I already have a barracuda stock and falcon menace scope . I need advice on wich 10/22 to get . I was thinking of getting a standard one and getting a new barrel . Then i hear newer 10/22 are not compatible with VQ parts (ie trigger group) . What should i do ?

Get the cheapest model you can find and use it. VQ parts work fine, they are supplied with the needed bushing if you need em. Pick up a Green Mountain BBL and you'll have a tack driver :D

where can i get a Green mountain BBL ? and how about barrels that Fabsport carries ? worth the money ?? I heard the newer 10/22 fitted with the plastic trigger group werent compatible with VQ ones .

The VQ trigger groups now come with the propper shims and bushings, so no worries that way.

x2 on green mountain barrel, they are excellent!

Fabsports has some 18" in stock, they say they are expecting more soon....

bitsofpieces is another excellent retailer, they stock GM barrels.

In both cases just add a 'www' & a '.com' to the names and you are there!

Cheers!

from the vast ammount of research i have done on 10/22 barrels you can't beat the green mountain barrels. of course they are priced a bit high in canada but they are one of the most accurate barrels on the market(not to mention the cheapest$$)

Every time i see a range report about a green mountain barrel i want to sell my BC carbon fiber barrel and get one. but then i take my gun out and I can still pop gophers at 100yards with Winchester dynapoints, so i hold off for a while;)

Should i go with the 18" GM or wait till Fabsport get some shorter ones ? like 16 maybe ? or maybe fluted ?

I opted for a 16" Fluted GM barrel, 1 hole groups at 50yrds, under 1.25" at 75 yrds and under 4" at 100yrds. I am very happy with my purchase! I got it at bitsofpieces, Barry was really helpfull over the phone, I actually got all of my trigger parts and all the other stuff I wanted at the same time. The price of the barrel was $179 (if memory serves) total cost for all of the parts I got incl. shipping was $480ish.

Cheers!

4" at 100 yards? what's happening? i get .75" at 50 and she only opens up to 2-2.5" at 100 yards with my BC barrel. what ammo are you using?

Found the 16 fluted GM barrel , it s actually 189$ wich seems decent ; this is probably what im gonna get .

Now i got my 10/22 today but it doesnt fit the barracuda stock i got on EE . The 4 corners where the receiver goes seem like they are not square enough , should i sand it down ? to the naked eye it looks fine , am i doing something wrong ?

no, Prone. Using the Fed box as a rest... or off the bench.

I am hoping to get right out there I have been wishful trying it out at the 200yrd targets, I have a cheap platic rest that I use (sometimes), its of no use whatsoever with the center fire rifles, but it works really well with my .22's.

I put this combo together just a short while ago, and it shoots well..... Better than me for sure.

The 50yrd & 75yrd groups were on a really good day (Shooting American Eagle 38gr.) and the 100yrd 4" group was on a bad day (Shooting Federal Bulk Pack, with no bench rest) :(

I took a gopher at 200+ with this combo about 4 weeks ago, so I know that when the stars align & I do my part it will shoot!

What I really need is a dead calm day, preferably a Saturday, when my wife will let me "out" to go and shoot about 2000rnds at the range (if I have the yard work done, and the house painted and the weeds pulled etc. etc.)......

In my "dreams" I see me trying out Fed bulks, American eagle, Lapula Club, CCI Velociters & Blaser ammo all in one day (by some strange quirk of fate that happens to be the different .22 ammo that I currently have in the cabinet).

I just havn't had the time or the right conditions to really put this unit to the test. So far its been a little of this and a little of that....... :(

Cheers!

problem fitting 10/22 on a baracuda stock

Let s get back on track !!

I bought the fluted 18" barrel and to be honest, it gets a bit heavy if you are shooting off hand. Should have got the 16". On the other hand, my friend with a bone stock 10/22 and original barrel shoots amazingly well. He hits the pop ups at 100 yards just as often as me. I was under the mistaken impression that stock barrels were crappy. Not all, that's for sure.

Well if you buy a standard 10/22 for say $320, buy a bull barrel and stock for another $300 - 400...you are plus $600 - 700......then the VQ parts on top of that. Buy a 10/22 target...depending on ss/blue or heavy stock or composite adjustable stock for $400 - 600. Already has the 20" bull barrel and ruger target trigger....not a VQ trigger but a lighter trigger than the standard issue.

Federal bulk..... It's me not the gun I am sure. When I put it on the shooting rest the groups get much better.

Cheers!

I noticed the ammo is sometimes inconsistand and the bullets tend to flot left and right of were Im aiming.. but Im useing the stock barrel and get 1 inch groupings at 100 yards.. now I take my old windchester out iron sights and i get a way better grouping at the same distance but when you look at the rifleing in the barrel then you see its way deeper on the windchester and the ruger rifling looks like they just scratched it on..

I did a home trigger job, stoned the hammer and sear to +2 degrees, polished the sear, hammer and trigger, removed the plunger behind the trigger, added a leaf spring to the top of the trigger and added an adjustable over travel stop behind the trigger. It was a fun project that eliminated over travel, seriously reduced felt creep and lightened the trigger to 1.25 lbs from 7.5.

So far on my 10/22 Sporter all I have done is stoned the hammer and sear and did a quick polish job on it. American Eagle 38gr is so far the best at about 1" groups at 50 yards with no rest. CCI standard velocity is right in there but drops too much. Going to try CCI Velociters next and bump it up to 100 yards. This is all with the factory barrel.

ive been known to shoot 4" groups with my 10/22 target @ 200yrds its all stock except a bolt buffer. under 2" @100 with bulk ammo and under .75" @ 50. i can even hit a 6" gong @ 300yrds 1 out of 3 shots. buy what ever you can afford. it dont matter much!
