I've been looking for a lightweight 10/22 for target shooting and hunting, which has led me down a rabbit hole. I'm stuck between piecing together all the components myself or buying Ruger's Model 31220. I know for sure that I want a carbon fiber barrel and the pricing is about the same with building one being slightly more expensive. I just wanted to get some other opinions on which would be the better move.

What's your budget?

Putting one together yourself is very satisfying and you can customize/personalize it just the way you want. It will cost more though.

Check out the Dlask TUF22 prebuilds or the Tacsol prebuilds or the SBI ones... all the tinkering has been sorted. Also... the Derya is surprisingly awesome. Light, fast, accurate. A lot of steel challenge guys are using them.

If you think you'll be happy with minimal change after off the shelf, go for it
If you think you'll tinker and change most of the parts out anyway, might as well start with that
I do like tinkering and would probably swap parts out. Now I guess my next question would be what carbon barrels are out there and what is the most popular receiver/bolt ?I’ve been eyeing up the SBI parts and seen some post on here that give them good ratings.

I have the Target lite with the alum tension sleeve barrel, and it is no more accurate than a standard 10/22.

Might do 5/8" at 50, somedays 1inch. Best I ever got was 1.9" at 100.

Then having mid 90s 10/22, the quality of new ones are sh!t.

Got grey birch while they were still in Canada. Seems very well made. They use proprietary barrel mating that is not v block so barrel swap might not be the easiest.

Ya I’ve heard the quality of new 10/22s have went down which is another reason why I was leaning more towards building one but after seeing the carbon fiber ruger it made me second guess myself.

I have 2 SBI ST-22 receivers. I like the AR style top charging handle. They also have a cutout to fit HC3R 25 round mags (if you can find them).

Here's my "do it all" 22.

As someone who has built up a target 10/22 its easier to get one thats already done. Mine was built with Kidd parts and is very similar to a Dlask build.

Its collecting dust now...the itch is long gone. I think nowadays i might lean towards a christensen arms 22 if i were to spend that kind of money now. My friend has one and it goes toe to toe with my custom 10/22...it even uses the same mags.
