Has anyone tried this conversion and what did they think. I was going to build up a Ruger I had and keep the 22lr but saw that I could convert it into a 17 mach 2 and was thinking.....

Any comments would be appreciated.

Check out rimfirecentral.com . There are a lot of guys that have done the conversion.

Personally, I think the money spent to go to 1.7HM2 is wasted. I'd rather keep the 10/22 stock, and buy a .17HMR bolt action or something. The gains in .17HM2 over .22LR are pretty minimal.

Alternately, I think they DO sell a Ruger 10/17 from the factory now. At least that's what I saw in the wholesale catalogue. Funny, it doesn't appear on the Ruger website... hmmm.. maybe all that pushin on the can makes my eyes see things that aren't there. hahaha

I am not sure if you can call just about double(or at least 50 yards) the effective range minimal, or getting 22 match like/or better accuracy for $8 a box, minimal either considering. The big problem is the best bang for buck kit (ebco barrel and bolt handle kit) is not available in Canada since he won't ship international. VQ is supposed to have a kit but it seems (from what I have read) more involved in getting it going and more money.

Ruger had a 17 hmr version but it seems to have been dropped.

Gotta agree with CH on this one. Yes you get better range and yes you get better accuracy..... on a calm day. The lighter bullet tends to drift a bit more in the wind. But at $8 a box you could go to the 22 magnum and for $10 a box you could go for the hmr and get much better performance. I know only one person who went with the mach 2 and he regretted it. It comes up short compared to the 17hmr and is too expensive compared to the .22lr. He traded it off on a 17hmr right quick. It comes down to preference I guess. It costs about $175 USD for the bolt and $150USD for the barrel to convert a 10/22. For that you could get a Marlin 717 in mach 2. Or you could buy a decent bolt action magnum for that.

It realy depends on usage, I use my hmr for gophers and I am reasonably convinced that the extra 500 fps is worth the 3-4 buck extra a box for my ussage, but only reasonably.

But I usually carry 2 guns at any one time an hmr and a centerfire is too expensive on a high volume field, 22 and centerfire leaves too much of a gap. Now 22 and 17 hmr has possibilities short of really windy days, or times where you can get good distance (200+) and can set up tables.

But the 17 m2 and centerfire has real potential as a gopher combo cheaper than hmr and does not leave the gap that 22 does.

As for hunting edibe game I would not use hmr on anything smaller than a jackrabbit.
