10/22 Conversion to smooth bore

As Jackie Gleason used to say and away we go. I have a barrel for a Crickett rifle single shot and a barrel for a 10/22 Ruger being reamed to smoothbore. The big question will be whether CCI shot shells can recycle the action on the Ruger without modification.

Unlikely. 10/22's can't cycle regular LR ammo out of the box without tinkering.

And the answer is the CCI shotshells will not cycle the action in my rifle. I may try a lighter action spring next but will not go to a light weight bolt because of cost. Works reasonably using the bolt handle manually.

I have a project 10/22 going right now with the sole intention of making it cycle CCI quiets. If you want something similar I suggest polishing the inside of the receiver, polishing/deburring any rough bolt surfaces, radiusing and polishing the bolt, polishing the hammer face, and paying attention to if the bolt is contacting the end of your guide rod, and taking material off it so it doesn't. Then i'd look into the Kidd guide rod and spring set that Dlask sells, and using the subsonic spring with a few coils clipped off.

I tried a Norinco copy of the Browning .22 semi auto just to see what would happen. CCI shot shells will not cycle the action although it works well manually.

My guess is that at close range (which you would have to experiment with) the shot would kill rats. We have been infested with chipmunks who are going to get a surprise in the spring.

For sure the stock setup wouldn't cycle with the federals, no experience on whether the cci pack a bit more punch.

I do know a fella who just got an old bolt action 22 and it has a routledge bore which he says works just fantastic for shot, but semi accurate with a regular bullet still.

Maybe worth looking into for a dual purpose garden gun?

My 1022 stainless will not cycle any brand of shotshell I have put in it. I have a real bad problem with tree rats trying to live in my garage.

I shot a rat with cci shot once. It turned and i swear it growled before it ran off. Itll kill sparrows and pigeons in a barn though. Ive shot mice in the basement of the old farm house i lived in and it worked well.
Flying grasshoppers are the best targets though

There used to be a thing called mosquito skeet shot with smooth bore rimfires. It was shot indoors
