10/22 CRR (compact) questions

Hey CGN'errs,

I'm planning to get a 10/22 CRR compact model. I plan to swap out the stock with one that folds. I'm looking for a highly portable and very light weight setup. I was planning on getting the Butler Creek folding stock, but noticed that it incorporates the use of the 10/22's original barrel band. However, the 10/22 compact model does not have a barrel band? Would the Butler Creek folding stock still be compatible with the 10/22 compact model that does not use a barrel band? Was also looking at the Choate folding stock. Between the Choate and Butler Creek, which is the better quality and better fitting stock?

Also, I've heard that the fiber optic sites on the compact are harder to use for larger adults than the sites on a regular, full-sized 10/22 model. Is there any truth to this statement? Will probably opt for one of those Vortex Sparc red dot sites in the near future, but would be nice to have BUIS that I can use as well. Also plan on getting Butler Creek steel lip mags, auto-bolt release, hex take-down bolt, and a good single stage trigger group assembly (looking at the Timney triggers). Any experience with Timney? Any opinions suggestions?

Will be using CCI subsonic and CCI Velocitor (Hyper Velocity) rounds. I'm guessing the 10/22 should be able to handle hyper velocity ammo, correct? Should it be able to cycle subsonics just as well?

Thanks for everyone's input in advance! :p

You may not be able to install a folding stock and keep OAL over 26". An 18.5" 10/22 barelled action isnt even 26" long. As for the barrel band, the crr uses the same barrel contour as the carbine so it will drop in but the step in the stock will look a little strange. It probably wont cycle subsonics without alot of polishing and some lighter springs, which will make it cycle quite hard with HV ammo. You can still shoot subs, just have to rack the action after each shot.

Haven't even considered OAL, good tip! That's really too bad, from what I understand, I wouldn't even be able to put a folder on an 18.5" carbine model. Come to think of it, now that I've tried finding one, I can't even find any Canadian dealer selling these Butler Creek folders. But that's weird considering that there are longer barreled 10/22s out there that would make a folder type still legal with OAL.

I have a compact 10/22 and the sights work fine for me (6'2"). I've also had no trouble with Remington subsonics cycling the action, but I've yet to try the CCI ones.

Too bad you cant put a folder on a 10/22 compact. That would be a super portable/lightweight combo.

I'm torn apart between putting a carbine 18.5" into a BC or Choate folder, or putting a compact into a telescoping/pistol grip stock like that free floating Blackhawk Axiom RF. That Axiom looks comfortable, not much info on it out there unfortunately. Maybe even a Hogue overmould.

Never liked the Tapco stocks. I've heard the fit is loose, and that top hand guard rail looks super cheesy IMO (no way that could ever hold a zero, pretty pointless). Also, the 6 screws that need to be undone to take it down seem very tedious.

What would you guys do? I'm guessing most of you would go with a compact and keep it stock. I hate wooden stocks though, so If I did get a compact, I would have to change it out for a Hogue stock. Maybe an Axiom if I want to take a risk.

folders have been done over and over for many years, but a short barrel in a full stock is still pretty new. After my wallet recovers from Christmas Ill probably be going this route with a barely legal 10/22 shorty of some sort. So long as people ask "is that legal?" than Ill be happy
