I have a 10/22 installed on a Archangel platform and lately I've been having a problem with the ammo not chambering all the way. It's not constant but random and frequent. I'm using Blaser 22s. I've shot the "blue box" Federals (high velocity) and the only problem I had with those was FTEs. I installed a Volquartsen extractor and don't have any more FTE. So do you think it's the ammo or does it need a good bath? I had it out today and took it apart to clean it thoroughly but I'll have to wait a while to check it out. I can use the Blasers in my S&W 617 so they won't be wasted. TC

Whatever you do. do not use 22 stingers, they do not cycle in the ruger 10/22 properly because they are like a milispec to big. I have the same archangel stock on mine and i have no problems at all. i know sometimes the cheap ammo is the way to go, i use high velocity bullets in mine.

Factory mags, or aftermarket? Which ones?

Might as well know that too. Some of the aftermarket mags perform...less than ideally.
Some need a few hundred rounds of break-in, or a tweak with a file or sandpaper onna stick.

Cheers

I have Butler Creek steel lips mags. The gun is well broken in, it was an old one I bought on the EE for this build. TC

sorry but you are wrong on that , That is for target chambered barrels The factory 18.5 10/22 barrel is fine for stingers

from the Ruger 10/22 manual

(page 13) The RUGER® 10/22® CARBINE and 10/22 Rifles are chambered for,
and designed to properly function with, only the 22 caliber Long Rifle rimfire
cartridge, standard, high velocity, or hyper-velocity, manufactured to U.S.
industry standards.

(page 14)“Stinger” cartridges have a longer case
than 22 LR cartridges loaded to U.S.
Industry specifications. They can stick
in the tighter chambers of target rifles,
including the Ruger 10/22 Target Rifle,
which can result in a hazardous
ruptured case and release of hot
powder gasses and brass when fired.
DO NOT USE
“STINGER” AMMUNITION IN
10/22 TARGET RIFLES

Well I meant that the bolt hangs so bad that it is pretty much fully open, doesn't get close enough to even strip a round out. However, if it is only happening with one mag it should be obvious where it's rubbing.

Are you using a mag loader?
I did just notice today that the BC mag loader I got works just fine with Winchester and the bulk Federal ammo. When I used the loader on the premium Federal target ammo it made a small dent in the side of the case about 1 in 10 rounds. That caused the same problem you describe. The bolt didn't fully seat on the second round.
I stripped out all the rounds and tossed the 3 bad ones, hand loaded all the target stuff and had no problems after that.

I do use a mag loader and I have experienced the "dented case syndrome". When I experienced the problems just before I posted this I was at the range and loaded the mags by hand. TC
