10/22 First round strays

I'm having some issues with my 10/22 the first round out of the mag usually strays about 2" out of the grouping, after that first round i can maintain really good groupings, i'm not sure what may cause this i have some ideas but wanted to post here to get some more experienced input.

I'm thinking perhaps when the slide is released from its locked back position its not sliding forward with sufficient force to properly seat the round. but when its firing the action moves much more quickly? make sense? if that seems reasonable can anyone think of a solution?

That seems to happen on some semi auto's, centre fire in particular.

I also notice with rimfire that the first group isn't as tight as the rest. I'm convinced something changes after a few shots and barrel gets warmed up or fouled further.

You either have to compensate or warm up the gun first with a few rounds you don't care about. 2" is a lot if its a hunting gun. Try different ammo?

Your theroy makes sense. I don't even know what to say to that prob. Very wierd. I think he maybe means check out rimfire central.
 
Isn't that what some call a fouling shot? I've heard people with this, some rifles are made for first shot accuracy.
 
this doesn't nessesarily only happen when the bore is cold even after shooting for 20-30 minutes more often than not the first round strays (almost always up and left too)

Could be the way the action closes on the 1st round from the magazine. It may also deform the bullet differently on the 1st round chambered.
 
What 10/22? Stock or customized? Altered bolt release plate? New or old and well broken in? Same magazine or different ones? 10 round or 25? Scoped or open sights? Offhand or bench rested? This is stuff we need to know to be able to make educated guesses? I would maybe hazzard a guess that you are correct about it not going into battery properly on the first round. Try lubing the bolt a little more and see if that helps. Also if it is an older gun modifiying the bolt release plate really helps to smoothly load the first round.

Its an SR22 i had the issue when it was bare stock, i recently added a DLASK 20" heavy barrel, the bolt / trigger and everything else is stock (well everything that matters i have changed the grip and added rails, i've had it about 3-4 months now, easily 5000 rounds down the original pipe and probably about 1000-2000 down the new barrel (and on a related note apart from the first round stray that dlask barrel really tightened up the groups)

couldn't hurt to give that a shot, its a cheap easy test :)
if it makes a difference i am only using the ruger rotary mags i haven't tried any of the aftermarket high cap magazines
 
Going to range sunday i'll give that a try, and i think a buddy of mine has some of the butler creek steel lip 20 round mags, i'll try that as well if i can get it off him :)
 
Sometimes I'll notice this effect. I used to think it was the aforementioned difference in how the bolt closes, but now I'm starting to think may also be my shooting. I think it takes me a shot or two to settle into a shooting rhythm.
