10/22 for lefties

My wife would like a 22lr and I was thinking about the Ruger 10/22. She is left handed so I wondered if the cases being ejected to the right would be a problem. I like the fact that it is some what compact and they also make a compact version. My wife is 61 and not that big so light would be good. She has shot 12 gauge in the past but not any more. What do you think or any other suggestions? Cheers Roscoe
 
No Problem at all. I am a southpaw as well. Occassionally when shooting from the prone position a case may fall into the crease of your elbow. It's warm but not hot. The 10/22 is an excellent rimfire. Best of all, you can trick it out with loads of cool aftermarket stuff making it even more user friendly
 
I've only fired about 150 rounds through a 10/22, but for me shooting it left handed seemed a bit more uncomfortable than it should be. What I mean by that is, first the shells somehow managed to bounce right into the collar of my shirt more than once (I was shooting leaning on a wall to my right though) and I got at least 10 stuck in the crook of my elbow. That didn't hurt as much but it makes you jump and I could see it make somebody squeeze one off accidentally. The other issue was the ejection port is so close to your face and the chamber spewed crud right into my right eye every shot. It was pretty clear it would be unsafe to fire a 10/22 left handed without safety glasses and impossible to shoot with both eyes open without eye protection.

Still, it was pretty fun with a red dot scope. It just didn't seem like it was as safe to shoot as I would like. Not worth the 300 bucks to me.

I've never had a problem shooting any semi auto pistol or rifle left handed. Casings fly out far enough, even with a .22, that there's no problem.
 
I have shot a 10/22 left handed for years. No problems at all. I have also replaced the safety with a left handed one. It isn't that difficult to do yourself if you are inclined to such things.
 
I had a 1022 and I am a leftie as well. Myself I found it occasionally awkward and eventually went to a lever and a couple of leftie bolt actions. My wife did not like either the 1022 or a bolt action. However she was pretty damn quick to take over my Winchester 9422. Very quickly became HER rifle so I am glad the Henry Golden Boy came along. Try a lever-they all seem to eject a long way from the face and are really comfy for women to shoot. Every lady that has shot either prefers them so far over either bolts and semis. Something to consider. I now shoot a leftie CZ452 and a leftie CZ527. No going back now. If you were out here I would take you out to the range and cut her loose. Let her play with all the odd guns.
