10/22 Gopher Rigs let's see 'em!

Don't have photos at the moment. My gopher gun is a 10-22 "deluxe" with a bull-barrel, epoxy-bedded for the first couple of inches past the clamp block, and a regulator tab of epoxy up near the muzzle to support the heavy barrel.
A steel tube is slip-fit and loctited on the end of the muzzle to act as a 'bloop' tube to send the sound out the front
Back of the receiver drilled to allow cleaning from breech end without removing the barrel.
clark custom trigger
modifed bolt release
nylon bolt buffer
VQ extractor
firing pin has been stoned a bit on both sides. See if I can get some pictures. Oh, yes, I modified the receiver so it can take the mags for Dlask rifles and they feed OK if you individually charge the rounds - can't seem to get it to function when loaded from the "clips".
The muzzle is threaded for a suppressor but since they're illegal here, I sold all of my suppressors in NZ - including the .308 hunting rifle..

Lots of us didn’t know we couldn’t shoot gophers with stock 10/22’s, so we went forth and shot with them. I shot several years in some heavily infested gopher patches with a stainless 10/22 that carried a cheapo scope. Finally upgraded the scope to a nice little Bushnell I bought at Hipwell’s. To be fair, in some of those fields, you could have scored with a blindfold on.

I actually shot one year partly with an RIA clone, which did very well, at least according to my standards. :p I have settled for one (at a time) of my CZ 455’s, mostly .22lr or .17hmr, with the odd .22mag or shotgun thrown in. I don’t usually try for the long shots, as where I shoot there are usually ample gophers to shoot close by. Also,it is only sporting to fire some warning shots, right?

After I am done with Spring work on the farm I work for, I usually sally forth with my home on wheels and camp near a gopher patch for a few days. When in the act of shooting, I carry a little folding seat, and as of last summer, a nice swivelling base on a camera tripod, which one of my professional gopher shooter friends from another province built for me.

A couple of years back, I posted some pics and a bit of history about a nice old target rifle built in 1946/47 by G.B Crandall, chambered for what is now called “22-250”. It sports a Unertl scope. I am considering taking it out for shoot. I don’t know how much more classic a rifle one could take on a gopher shoot. Ackley barrel, Bishop stock, Model 98 action, Unertl scope, in what Crandall called 22-3000 cartridge. It was originally sold to Ted Gaillard’s uncle here in SK, sold soon after arrival to a gunner in my area, and between him and his son, it stayed on the same 1/4 section for the next 70 years or so.

^would be interested in seeing what that looks like! :)

This past spring, my brother and I managed to find what was probably our best gopher patch ever. It was 1 full section of pasture land, fenced into 1 amd not cross quartered or devided into paddocks. Between my self, my brother and a couple buddies, we managed 4,719 gophers. Yes, we all carry counters and you can only count ones that you kill outside the hole. Not ones you think you kind of maybe hit. My personal 1 day record this past year was 462 in a day and my brother managed an even 500. We should have easily broken 1,000 combined that day, but we had to leave the field early to head home for work.

You hit the nail on the head, the best bolt guns around (on a budget) are the CZ 452s. I shoot a LH 452 American and my brother shoots a RH 452 Varmint.

For semi autos, I ordered a Dlask TUF .22 from Dlask Arms in Delta, BC. 18.5" carbon steel barrel, dlask forward compensator, hogue stock, Kidd single stage trigger (with a LH volquartsen safety), Kidd bolt, Kidd buffer, kid charging handle and rod, dlask spring kit, with a vortex diamond tactical 6-24x50 FFP scope. Barrel, charging handle and trigger blade all Cerekoted in Lollipop Purple.

As much as I thought I would love the 25 round mags with the TUF, they're too slow to load when you're in a hot spot. So instead I threw an idea at a local company called Guard Dog Foam Inserts and they CNC routered a custom foam insert for a Nanuk 904 case that nicely holds 6 mags and a full brick of .22lr. It helps me stay organized in the field, so I don't lose mags or drop ammo. And you know once you're down to just 1 or 2 mags, start loading the others. I keep 6 mags in the case of 1 in my gun at all times.

Here's the case, they'll make them for anyone now and can alter them to fit any kind or style of magazine: https://www.guarddoginserts.com/product/22lr-range-day-foam-insert-for-nanuk-904/
