Hey All,

Recently got my RPAL and wanting to get a Ruger 10/22 as my first gun. I'm looking at the tactical version which Cabella's sells for $639, but I'm wondering if I'm better off buying the cheap 10/22 with no sights for ~$269 and just buying an aftermarket stock for it. Basically my goal for this gun is something modular/customizable that I can shoot a lot of rounds through cheaply. Would love to get your guys' suggestions regarding this. Also, general question, but if Cabella's is selling it brand new for $630 why are people trying to sell their used one for like $700? I've noticed this with several guns where the resale price people are asking, you may as well just buy new, am I missing something?

Thanks helping out a noob!

I purchased a no sights version as well as a VQ hammer kit from Sylvestre and it works great. Actually I was quite surprised with the accuracy as is. For the price you can mess around with it and pick up an aftermarket stock later if you need it. I liked the tacticool stuff at first but find I prefer traditional stocks now. I dunno I just never liked a pistol grip stock. You can dress it up however you want but in the end its still a .22

One of the 10/22's I have is the SR-22, which is basically a 10/22 in an aluminum chassis that superficially resembles an AR-15. It is quite heavy relative to my other ones. Not sure how the tactical at Cabela's compares, but it were me I'd either buy a cheap synthetic stock one and then pimp it out from there, or if money isn't much of a concern, just build one from the ground up using a TUF-22, C-71 or Grey Birch receiver (in which case you need to buy all the internals as well). Keep in mind those receivers may have fitting issues with some chassis.

Check out Crazy Ivan chassis, there's some pretty sweet builds using them. While not exactly matching the aesthetic, it might scratch that "AR itch" you got. I plan to use one in an upcoming build. Midwest Industries also has a chassis that will provide a similar look.

I've had many 10-22s over the years and never kept any until now. I bought a used one and the ATI stock set off the EE, mated them and now have a fun toy to play with. All for less than $450 excluding optic.

people try and charge you for all the labour they put in, shooting the rifle and cleaning it (maybe, maybe not) and "making it better."

Thanks for the input guys. Should clarify I do plan on getting other guns, I have a list of milsurp stuff I'm interested in. I found a guy on ####### who was selling the exact package I was looking for at a reasonable price. So hopefully I will be a proper gun-owner soon!

A bunch of people in EE try to rip off others by asking too much for their used firearms in my opinion. It is like they don't know there is a thing called the internet where buyers will know what the new price is for the gun they are selling with about 5 seconds of research.

buy the cheapest one. put a half-decent scope on it. try that for a while, then decide if you need all the bells and whistles.

If you want a nice accurate 10/22, get Dlask to assemble one for you. Money well spent. Factory 10/22s can be real hit or miss function and accuracy wise.
