I took my new Rugar 10/22 lasermax to the range for the first time yesterday and I was a bit disappointed. The laser was very difficult to see with the naked eye at 25 yards and pretty much disappeared at 50. I'm thinking I paid an extra $100 or so for a gimmick. :(

I also noticed that the gun was shooting 8"+ off to the left at 50 yards. Looking at the rear sight it was very visibly off centre . I know I'm a newb but whacking your new rifle with a hammer and a brass rod (as per the manual) seems a pretty crude way to adjust the sights.

Seems like Rugar could use a little better quality control before these go out the door. If you're going to use a rear site that's fixed in terms of windage at least put it on straight at the factory!

On a more positive note, the gun performed flawlessly with both the stock mag and a Butler Creek steel lips 25 round. It ate about 200 rounds of both Remington Thunderbolt and Winchester 555 with out a single hiccup.

A red laser is pretty tough too see in day light. Green is actually the preferred color the preferred color as the eye picks it out better.

At low temperatures (freezing) my laser doesn't work at all. Enter the hand warmer too help the batteries out.

When a laser sight works it is great. Best too have the irons sighted or a scope for when it doesn't.

Lasers were of very limited usefulness long before Ruger slapped one on a factory 10/22. As for the sights, I agree...and had QC issues with the only new 10/22 I ever bought. (=overpaid for what you get) 10/22s are fixer-uppers right out of the gate if you ask me, it's been my experience...and that of friends of mine too. Sure you get crappy iron sights on a Marlin 795 too~but at least the rifle is accurate and you're paying 1/2 as much for a new one! :)
