Maybe it was a bad day, but I'm tired of chasing parts around the workshop after trying to re-asseble 1022 mags.

Has anyone developed an easy technique or tool for re-assembling mags and setting the proper follower spring tension? There's gotta be a dead-simple way that I'm missing.....

check on www.rimfirecentral.com I extracted this.

Hey folks,

I recently found it necessary to clean my Ruger 10/22 factory magazines, as they were having feeding issues. Googling produced some results, but they were not terribly clear, and much swearing ensued.

After successfully wranging with them for a while, I figured there had to be a better way. Thus, I wrote step-by-step directions and took some close-up photographs to aid the directions. I then threw all this together into a simple web page, which is located here:

Thanks JohnC, that's the technique I use too. I always find that setting proper spring tension is a three-handed afair. Especially with older mags, that might need more than 6-flats of tension.

Maybe I'll fabricate a tool that willl hold spring tension and allow me to push the nut into the recess.

isn't the glory of the 10/22 mag the fact that it requires no real maintenance?
i used to average about 5k a summer through mine and other than cleaning the waxy bullet lube gunk off the feed ramp/lip i just kept shooting it...

Donny,
In my experience older 10/22 mags do not need to be tightened for reliable feeding with the factory barrel, however, the newer mags are usually not wound tight enough.
Proper tension on the mag spring is essential for optimum accuracy on modified rifles and to help prevent lead shaving with aftermarket barrels.
