10/22 missing function

hey all, so i got my first 10/22, in a nomad stock, and ive noticed this gun doesn't have an auto bolt hold on last shot fired? it never came with the manual, and i've tore it down to find the problem and well it seems to be designed to not have that function... unlike my 597 yellow jacket which happily holds open and waits for the next mag and a flick of the bolt. hmm well that is really gonna drive me nuts, i figure a gun with as big a following as this would have that nice feature. its annoying going click after a 25rd mag, and it cant be good for the gun to dry fire every mag. i sure hope archangel comes out with a nomad stock and mags for the 597, i love mine. theres my little rant, i searched but couldnt find much on the subject.
 
Pretty sure they have a firing pin stop in them to prevent damage but yeah its a surprise they don't have that feature.
 
Spend some time looking at the bolt, and you will see that, unless it has been incorrectly assembled, or aftermarket or home mead parts are installed without having paid enough attention to dimensional details, the firing pin is physically incapable of contacting the breech face.

Go to Ruger's website and download the manual. Or search it out online if you must.
But there is no danger or harm to be done by dry firing a 10/22, per Ruger.

Just another guy that was fed bad advice and followed it without knowing why, or whether it actually applied to you.

10/22's never had an auto bolt hold open. At best, they have a manual bolt retainer that can usually be counted on to get in the way, if you tend to hold the forend close in, and make contact with it.
If you read the sticky on 10/22 mods, there is instructions there to mod the early bolt hold back so it operates like the new ones. Or you can remove it entirely, and the gun will work just fine without it.

If you really feel the need to have an auto bolt hold open onna 10/22, there is an expensive kit available, that requires expensive modded magazines. Seems a pointless exercise though.

As has already been said, nothing wrong with dry firing a 10/22. I never remember how many rounds I've fired with mine, so I carefully aim to be rewarded with a click at the end of pretty much every mag.

It beats the last time I took it out, forgot all my mags, and spent the day loading one round into the breech at a time :p
 
yah its not really a huge deal, if i hadnt already had a 597, which is awesome by the way, i wouldnt have been spoiled to a nice hold open that works like a bigger centerfire semi. heck even my cheapo plinkster had a crappy version of a hold open, just to tell you its empty. the marlin 795, even though i didnt think much of the ergo of the gun or the mags, does have a sweet hold open with even a tactical style bolt release like an AR, that would be the ultimate in a 1022.... oh if they could just get together and make some hybrid offsrping lol.

Yeah, that's why I like it. It's not a perfect gun, but accurate as all get-out, the charging handle requires no upgrade (read~it's adult-sized, knurled at the end, works great with/wo gloves, holds open on the last shot, etc.) Drop the mag, insert another, hit the action release, away you go. I can say nothing negative about stock, 10rd. Ruger box mags, save for the fact that they require the rifle's stock to be wider than it needs to be. The Marlin steel mags look/feel cheap...but I've grown to like how compact those single-stackers are in my coat pocket. :)

The way I see it, an auto bolt hold open feature is designed for rifles that require extra fast mag changes and the least amount of possible between the last shot in a mag and the next shot in a new mag. The 10/22 is not a combat firearm. Its a fun, reliable plinking gun thats great for targets and/or small game. The hold open feature is simply not a necessity in a gun like this. If you were in battle, it would be annoying (read anything about this and the AK47 and youll see its a problem). But why would you ever need to load a new mag and be ready to fire again that fast while your shooting targets or out in the woods hunting squirrels? Its just not necessary.

Ive got the nomad on my 10/22. I lock the bolt open when im done firing so anyone who sees the gun can see its safe. I lock it open any time Im walking down range so I know its safe and I lock it open to clean it. The auto bolt release is a nice feature IMO (and the nomad kit comes with the necessary part so you dont need mods) because the alternative is to pull the bolt back and awkwardly push up on a tiny lip of metal that doesnt always work the way you expected. Its just stupid. But an auto bolt hold open is not necessary IMO.
