10/22 picky with ammo?

Wow...that's too bad so many folks have problems with the 10/22's...I assume it is newer ones. I've owned mine since about 1987, have 4 different mags for it and they all work great. I can count on one hand how many duds I've had out of many thousands of rounds and I would blame those on the ammo. I wonder what changed? I noticed my buddies newer 10/22 is pretty finicky. ..it only seems to like cci's.

my brand new 10/22 takedown was bought in June 2014. it's been at the repair center twice now and is still there. it's a jamomatic and double fires almost every mag. it's been at the repair center in Quebec most of it's life. I can't even remember what it looks like. it's a lemon

they still haven't figured out what's wrong with it. Snap Shots replaced the bolt and that helped. apparently there was a whole bunch of 10/22's that had bad bolts out of spec causing feeding problems, double fires, and slam fires out of battery. the gun blew up on me before I sent it in for repair.

after the bolt was replaced it still double fires. they cannot figure it out. Ruger will not replace it. Snap Shots doesn't know how to fix it.

all I can say is they sure don't make them like they used to. I wouldn't buy another Ruger product. their customer service sucks

I thought 10/22's were supposed to be reliable. I'm into this piece of turd for about $750 plus all the time packing and shipping it back and forth.

I got two lowball offers for it which was really insulting. for $100 I rather just keep it as a wall hanger

Are all if these problems while using aftermarket mags or while using the factory 10rd mags? The plastic feed lip butler creeks are garbage and the steel lipped version often needs to be broken in or polished. The HC3Rs are reliable, but only if you know how to load them properly. Never once had a problem with the Ruger factory mags though.

Does anyone have a link to a good instructional for steel lip polishing? I'd like to hurry the process on this rifle and I won't be shooting it much until I start competing with it.. For now, trying to have as much fun as I can with the AR.

My 2 steel lips mags were used and came with the gun, both fire 25 rounds without a problem. Guess I'm lucky they were broken in already.

not had a chance to shoot many types of ammo, but i found winchester wildcats, and reminton thunderbolts did not cycle as well. i prefer federal value 525 packs. just wish i could find more of em to buy... the box is only 20% full now. and only got one more box left after that. guess i should be happy i have that still really i know others are even more hard pressed.

been thinking of getting a bolt in 22.lr so that i may not care what brand i'm shooting anymore.

i like the tip for the VQ extractor though! I will probably do that upgrade.

You may want to check the bottom of your bolt. One of my 10/22's had a bolt that was pretty rough on the underside - you could see where it was rubbing on the mag lips. Gave the underside a light sanding with some fine emery cloth and a bit of a polish with Autosol and it's working great now with all my BC mags. Those BC mags were already working great with my other 10/22's - I checked the underside of their bolts and they were pretty smooth already. Unfortunately the quality control from Ruger can be a bit spotty at times.

Thanks VanMan. I'll double-check as she's due for a cleaning, but I'm pretty sure I already polished those surfaces. I'll see if I missed any and if I did, I'll sand them down with a 1000 grit mylar sheet and then some Dremel red. I know that some people sanded/polished their feed lips, but I'm not sure which parts as there were mentions of both the top side and the underside.
