Hi guys,

I have a 10/22 that I got back at the end of March brand new. I just got my license the day before and had never shot before.

Just a couple of days ago, I was cleaning my gun and noticed some possible chips out of the muzzle.

What, if anything, would you suggest I do? I'm a new shooter so I don't know if it's causing me any issues.

Thanks!

Doesn't look like it's effecting the chamferd part on the muzzle so I'd think it would be okay. If you don't like it or are getting terrible accuracy you could get it re crowned.

Thanks. I'm going to take it to the range tomorrow and see how it goes. It's my first new gun so if it does need fixing, I will see how much it will cost to get it re-crowned or just get a new barrel.

What kind of gun is this?

This can happen thru cleaning while improperly pulling the jag back thru the barrel in cleaning.

When buying guns after you get a couple of lemons you learn fast how to inspect in more detail be for use. I suggest shining a light either direction down the barrel to make sure all is well. Otherwise the issue looks mostly cosmetic unless the metal is rather rough or interfering with barrel exit. Unless your rough handling or poorly cleaning your guns someone may have dropped your rifle? Before you got it.

It is a Ruger 10/22 stainless steel. I honestly don't know how it happened. Possibly since day 1, or from my cleaning. I'm not sure how I could have caused the "crack" or chip in the top left though.

the only way those are gonna mess up your accuracy is if they are on the are where the bullet last touches as it leaves your barrel (the crown)
those do not look to be touching it at all so your all good.
if your OCD you could polish those out but really at the end of the day your not or should not be looking at that end of your barrel to begin with!
hahaha!

That nick and ding should not affect accuracy -- they are nowhere near the surfaces that the bullet rides along inside the barrel.

But holy o'frig does that finish look like it was done with the chipped tooth off a dead rat. I understand that's a macro photo but still -- the machine work there looks rough.

Drop your rifle on its muzzy? The bottom left one DOES look like it could have a minor imperfection in the crown. (the big back triangle of darkness where metal looks like it should be) The other two dents are cosmetic.

I did take it out on Monday and I found no issues with accuracy. I'm going to leave it for now and maybe some time in the future, when I'm modifying my 10/22, replace the barrel with a KID or something.

Thanks everyone for helping a newbie out.

Shoot at some paper targets. 25/50/75/100 yards.
Then look to see if the holes created are uniform.
I'm confident that all of the holes you make will be good.
