10/22 problem Help !

Was at the range yesterday sighting in a new scope , while shooting everything was fine , then all of sudden , fired first shot , shell ejects, new shell loaded , then go to pull the trigger and nothing .... Pulled the bolt back and expelled loaded shell and new one in then it fired , but would not keep firing unless bolt pulled back....

Has anyone had this problem ? is it a problem with the disconnector not locking the sear into the hammer or ? This is only the 3rd time ive used this gun , bought brand new ?

I suspect that the bolt is not moving rearward enough to re-#### the action.....

It could be an ammo issue....

Have you used this ammo before?

How old is the rifle?

Have you changed anything else since the last time you fired it? ie: Bolt buffer, hammer, sear, disconnector, bolt release etc.....

The only time I have ever heard of problems like this with a 10/22 was when it was an ammo issue.....
 
If you done anywork in the trigger and installed the hammer strut c clip with the c facing down this can happen . alos if you put a rail on it check to see if the bolts/screws are interfering with the bolt

I believe you are correct, do you have an adjustable sear? To check what is happening remove your trigger group, #### the hammer and pull the trigger easing the hammer down and maintaining pressure on the trigger. While still holding the trigger in, pull the hammer back, the sear should engage the hammer and hold it back.
 
You should be able to tell if the hammer is being locked in the cocked position when pulling the bolt back manually.if there is no free travel in the bolt the hammer is not being locked into the cocked position.if the bolt is being locked into the cocked position the bolt will move rearward for about 1/2 to 3/4" freely then you will feel it contact the hammer.sounds to me to be a problem with the trigger and disconnector not resetting once the trigger is released.

I should have remebered this!

I once added an aftermarket rail to my dads 10/22, The action would not cycle properly as the screws that came with the rail would bind on the bolt. I changed out the screws to the factory ones, (I had thought they were a little short, but they have worked for the last 5 yrs, so I guess not) it has worked well ever since.

Gun worked fine something changed now gun not working . run down the list of whats different scope base/mount ammo maybe it just needs a good cleaning and some hypervelocity ammo . maybe remove some paint from the reciever (inside) and chamfer the bolt . go through the gun take off Trigger group and see if it resets normal. after all else fails let someone else have a look im sure theres a gunnut in your area . keep us posted
 
I took the entire unit apart last night , cleaned thoroughly which is was pretty clean to begin with , have to wait till the weekend to try it out , I did notice the hammer spring came out very easily meanin i just turned it upside down and it fell out .. I made sure the open slot in the clip was facing up when i re-installed and it sat in there tight ? would that have a made it act the way it was ?

No the hammer strut and spring are free floating and is held captive by the hammer.did there appear to be any signs of the bolt dragging on the inside of the receiver.does the bolt handle travel freely on the guide rod?does the hammer lock into the sear when cocked with your thumb.#### the hammer hold your thumb on it (don't let the hammer free travel)and squeese the trigger to see if the hammer is released.if the hammer releases keep the trigger squeesed in and see if the hammer will recock if thehammer recocks release the trigger and you should hear a click when the trigger reinguages the sear.squees the trigger again with your thumb on the hammer to see if it is released.hope this is of some help.

Everything checked out properly as to what you said , So ill try again on sat and see what happens , thanks for your help !
 
A1 the trigger group is working as it should.try some hyper velocity ammo .the ammo may have been weak and was not fully cycling the bolt.at the very least you learned how the trigger group and bolt work.best of luck and i hope your problem is solved.:cool:
 
Was at the range on sat and everything went proper , so im not too sure really what I changed cause I didnt do much besides took everything apart and made sure it was working properly and cleaned thoroughly ..
 
Take some scotch brite (pan scouring pads, not the soaped ones), and smooth out your internals. Break down your action, take out bolt. Rub everything down. Soften all those minute pits in the metal. Polish it up til it looks smooth. This will take care of alot of the cycling issues. Spray it all liberally with a good gun oil, let it sit for ten minutes. Then clean everything with a clean dry cloth or shop-towel. A quick spray on the guide rod should do the trick. The oil soaks in to the metal, so after you wipe, there is still lubricant present.

Make sure your scope mount screws arnt blocking your bolt on the inside. Make sure all springs are correctly alligned. Sounds like you fixed your problem. Just get into taking it all apart and reassembling, you will soon be able to identify your own problems. :)
