Hey All,
I have been having an issue with a 10/22 that my father bought in about the mid 60s.

Recently it has started mis-feeding while stripping rounds from the magazine, I blamed this on poor mags ... but

this weekend while replacing the barrel, it started to missfeed on almost every round. Visually it looks like the round is 1/2 stripped from the mag and then binds. I took everything apart ensured it was back together correctly, cleaned and put back together. Problem still existed.

So I manually pushed the bolt home and it fires and ejects perfectly and fails to load about 98% of the time. It looks to me like the operation spring isn't strong enought to push the bolt over the ejector (not extractor). Has anyone else had this problem?

Does it Sound likely that the action spring has lost its sprung ;) ??

Let me know if you have any ideas, thanks in advance,
Craig

I have never seen an action spring wear out, and I have some old 10/22's with hundreds of thousands of rounds. Have never heard of it either. Doesnt mean it can't happen, just a very unusual failure.

Did you mount a scope rail recently?
The bolt could be binding on the screws

Have you removed the barrel? If you overtighten the barrel block bolts the barrel will point down, causing misfeeds.

I presume you have tried swapping mags. New mags need the springs tightened to work well.

Are your mags seating solidly? A very common problem with old 10/22s is the receiver recess where the mag lug seats gets worn and the mag moves around too much. You can fix this by lightly greasing the mag and putting a bit of JB weld in the recess, then carefully inserting the mag and leaving it till the epoxy dries. Then remove the mag and trim away the excess epoxy.

Interesting reply Reg and some useful tips. Thanks for that info. I'm curious to know just how tight should the 'V' block bolts be? Do you have a torque setting?

As reg said, did you recently mount a scope? When I mounted my scope, this happened because Loc-Tite had dripped into the chamber, causing mis-feed issues. Let me know.

Sorry, no scope mount but I'll check to see the clearence in the top of the reciever.

I'll check on the barrel but the misfeeds are happening prior to a round being stripped frm the mag so I'd think that it isn't this.

Tried 4 mags, 2 rugers and 2 steellips, all have the same issue with about a 95% failure rates. Would love to hear how you tighten the springs.

The Mag thing is interesting I'll check the slop.

thanks for the ideas, I would think this gun has 250 000, 350000 rounds through it.

try ammo

The only feeding problems I've have had is with a bad batch of ammo.I usually use thunderbolts. I had 1 box that over 20 out of 50 wouldn't load. I've shot around 10,000 rounds through my 10-22
