the paint/powdercoating on the receiver of my 10/22 is pretty much falling off. it seems to be flaking off under the bolt, around the ejection port and is starting to bubble on the outside of the receiver.i bought the gun about 2 weeks ago. the store i bought it from wont let me exchange it for another one and says i have to deal with ruger.
so...
should i send it to ruger?
or would i be better off just stripping it myself and polishing it?

Sounds like it's screwed...better send it to me and I'll dispose of it:D

Any pics of the finish? might give folks here a better idea of what you are up against.

What are you using to clean the reciever with? Almost sounds like a reaction to Easy-off or something.

yeah mine did that too, under the bolt and around the ejection port i was pretty PO initially, but then i just stopped careing. I figured it would be too much hassle dealing with ruger.

let us know what ruger says, maybe ill complain too.

From what I have read they used cheap ass paint now and it flakes off. You can send it back to Ruger and they will repaint it for free, don't know about the shipping of the receiver to the states though. However they will repaint it with the same cheap stuff again.

Strip, sand, prime and paint it yourself. That is my plan if mine ever gets that bad, right now it is just some paint wear on the inside of the receiver which I don't care about.

I used a fine sand in my blasting cabinet and then clear wheel paint from CT, did the same to the barrel also. I think it looks pretty good.

Buying a firearm that needs repair from a store doesn't come with customer service after two weeks? What's the point of purchasing from a store then?

Flaking off of the finish in the reciever (under the bolt) is nornall and i have had this happen to me. But the bubbling outside of this is something that shouldn't be happening.

Same here (inside reciever)

My 10/22 had the same problem with the paint coming off inside the reciever, but the outside is fine.

Yeah- same here. Inside but not out. I noticed it after maybe 200-250 rounds. Admittedly, that was the first time I took the bolt out to give it a thorough cleaning.

As long as there's no rust and its only on the inside, is it something I should be concerned about? It would suck to have that on the outside- hope you get in taken care of...

Same thing happened on mine. I just stripped off what was loose and am not too worried about it. There are a number of threads on Rimfire Central about this topic. It seems to be a regular occurance with the 10-22 as well as Ruger replacing metal parts with plastic.

Considering the reeceiver is made out of crappy soft aluminum, it would be pretty hard to make it rust. ;)

I wish I could just order up a nice machined receiver from south of the line and swap that out too...
