10/22 problem

I have a 10/22 with an ER Shaw 11.5 inch barrel on it, and an auto bolt release, and am having the following problem with it. After most shots, the bolt stays open, and I have to manually pull the action back, to chamber the next round. Sometimes, it will go good for a handful of rounds, and then stick open on a bunch. I've tried a few different ammos with it, and am using remington yellow jacket high velocity, but no luck.
Any ideas whats making it stick open at all? Any important details i'm overlooking? help!

The bolt is staying all the way open, as in the exact position it would lock open if you pulled the action open yourself, and locked it open. To close after it hangs up, i just pull a little back on the action and let go, exactly the same as you when first cocking it to fire from empty ya know? The auto bolt release was installed by a competent gun smithy dude (technical lingo) and am sure is installed correctly. Any links to pictures of it, so I can double check myself and rule out that possibility? As for cleaning, its a brand spanking new rifle, and I have cleaned it a couple time to rule this option out too. As for magazines, the original ten rounders, two butler creek steel lips, and the drum magazine all do basically the same thing, the drum being the worst in not only does it lock open, but also stove pipes really bad. Help.

You do know that the auto-bolt release conversion will ONLY work with magazines that have been modified to work with it...

And you do know that only factory 10rds magazines can be successfully converted... as you need to increase the spring tension for the slide stop to engage...

Are you talking about the CST 10/22 Automatic Bolt Stop or a standard modified slide release?

You will have to take the trigger assembly off the receiver (take stock off and punch those two pins out). Then when looking at it you will see the hammer, on the hammer pin there is the hammer, 2 bushings on each side of the hammer and a spring. The little bent part spring has to go on top of that little lip sticking up (see picture above) on the bolt release. The other straight end of the spring goes underneath the pin which the bolt release big hole and the ejector is on.

Easy way to check is that if you shake the gun and the bolt release moves around the spring is not on.
 
you should feel spring tension on the bolt hold open where it protrudes the bottom of the trigger group. if it just flops around without restance, the spring isn't hooked under the ejector pin in the trigger group properly or the spring is missing entirely.

did you buy the aftermarket ABR, or was your existing one modified? if you have the original, swap it in and see if that cures the problem.

as for your "competent smithy dude", don't bother! 10/22s are easy (and fun) to work on!
