10/22 receiver coating

I recently picked up a well used 10/22. Mechanically sound but the paint is worn heavily off the receiver and trigger group.
What should I use to strip off the old paint like substance?
What is a good coating to reapply?

I filled up a small metal bowl with circa 1850 stripper waited a half hour and scrubbed the finish with a stif nylon brush. I had to re soak it a couple times didnt take too long. Wear glasses and do it outside and latex gloves dont work. As for refinishing polish it or try easy liner from cantire.
