10/22 SHORT Sporter Barrel?

Hi guys!

I have a completely stock wood stocked 10/22 carbine. I like the classic look of the firearm, and I find it fun to plink "old-school" with iron sights as opposed to a scope.

However, I think the rifle would be even cooler if it had a short barrel (whatever is needed with the full stock to keep it NR) with iron sights...

I know I can't have a barrel cut down, as it would be prohib, so do you guys know anywhere I can find a factory sporter profile short 10/22 barrel with iron sights or some way to mount irons? I think I can go almost down to 8" but would be interested in anything 12" and under...

Any insight is appreciated thanks! I tried Dlask as I thought they did a run a few years back, but not now...
 
Methinks you are really only going to have a couple of options:

For a short, tapered barrel, Dlask has a 12.5" unit with an SR-22 profile (starting @ .750"). This would require gunsmith machining to add sights (I love Williams Fire Sights, myself). Unfortunately, later versions all seem to be threaded for the tacticool crowd. If you plan on keeping the original carbine stock, I am pretty sure you cannot go shorter than this as the barrel would end before the stock does~!

For a short bull barrel option, Green Mountain manufactures a 10" stainless barrel pre-fitted with the above-mentioned William Fire Sights; in a hogged-out CRR stock, this one measures a nice, non-restricted 27" OAL. To make it fit a carbine stock, you would have to sand it out, and cut off the nose where the silly barrel band goes. This would probably ruin the look you are going for.

If you want the original Ruger look with a performance barrel, you will probably have to switch out to a hardwood "Sporter" stock, or a hardwood or laminate "CRR" unit, as neither have barrel bands, and are easily reamed out for larger barrel profiles.

If you are set on keeping your original stock (with its ugly barrel band), the easiest way to go a bit shorter would be the stock Ruger CRR barrel, which I think is just over 16" and has a fibre optic front.
 
OK, so basically it would need to be a sight-less barrel and add sights.... Maybe more trouble than it's worth! I think the 12.5" Dlask barrel would be closest.

I would just take the barrel band off if I needed, could cut and reshape/refinish the stock as necessary.
 
See if volquartsen will ship a carbon fiber barrel with the Trijicon sights to Sylvestre source for sports in Alberta. I have a rifle with those sights and they are the bomb!
 
I put a threaded 10.5" charger bbl on, but I've not seen an option to do iron sights.

was a fella on here, i think he has it posted up in the 10/22 pic thread, has a 10.5" Dlask barrel on a stock stock that he refinished, really nice looking set up.

if you didnt want to go with sending your gun out to a gunsmith to get the irons put on you could always get some NoDak Spud irons, they will cost you like $150 or so by the time you get them up here.
they are made to go onto a bull barrel.

dlask told me they can machine dovetail slots for irons if I bought a barrel from them. Not sure how much extra it was.

Just to share an idea, I have my front sight mounted on a bayonet band. It uses a M14 NM front sight. I’m hoping to Ceracoat this project soon to finish it off. I call it a Ruger 10/22 GB.

instead of machining your iron sights into the barrel, drill and tap the appropriate williams or firesight iron sites onto the rifle. install a truglo for that low light configuration and off to the races. likely less expensive than having the slots machined into the barrel.
