I use a marlin 981t and have found shorts and lr-cb's are about the same noise level. But the shorts are zipping along at 1000ft/s compared to 740ft/s cb's. Subsonics are a bit louder from there.

Remington's rimfire ammo is quite bad in my experience, absolutely dirty and unconsistent. I weighted 10 cartrige of 6 brands, and got a deviance of 1 gr in remingtons's where I got only 0.4gr for most and 0.2 for federal champion. While this kind of test does not mean all, it gives an idea of the consistency of the ammo...
I trust cci more than remington(for rimfire)

Just thought I would follow up. Got to the range today with cci subs and CB
cci subs work top noch in my stock 10/22, not 1 jam through 6 mags, accurate enough to shoot at 12 ga brass at 25 yds, so accurate enough for hunting, though not as silent as I would like...but they will be ok, I won't be shooting all day long anyway.
The cb however are quite inacurate and incredibly slow. I can actually see the bullet flying in my 2.5x30 scope, just as if I threw it with a slingshot. at 25 yds 10 bullets made a 4 inch vertical line on paper...maybe my barrel is not clean enough, as at those speeds any dirt must have some effect...

I don't think it's your barrel...I was shooting CB's over the weekend and had the same issues, along with two or three of the dreaded "twiinnng" sounds...ricochets (out of only about 40 rounds before I gave up shooting them). At 50 yards I had to pull about 6-7" high. For what I do, they are a total waste of time.
Sorry about the stock ruger comment not cycling the subs, I was thinking CB's. I've found you need around 800 fps to cycle a stock ruger.
I do find that with CB's the first shot is in a way different spot than the rest of the group.
I have mine sighted in for 20 yards. At 30 yards I have to use where the crosshair gets fat to aim high on 7x. At 40 yards I have to use the same crosshair fat spot on 4x to hit the mark. I have a leupold rimfire 2-7 on it. Pretty much out of range after 45 yards. In my yard all my shots are either 20 or 40 yards, so that's why I've picked those yardages.
The best thing to do is shoot a variety of ammo and pick one that shoot good thru your gun. Then figure out how far most of your shot will be. Sight the gun in for that and then do some testing so you know how much the bullet will drop past your sight in spot.

I suggest running 2 bricks of cci minimags through her first, that will loosen up the bcg and spring, smooth everthing out and then and only then will she cycle subsonics to your satisfacion. you simply have to break the gun in and that takes time and ammo. Or like some suggest use light springs, polish the rails with jewelers rouge etc etc. Its more fun to break it in with powerful ammo though. It works extremely well.
i have never had a problem with Rem subs (mine is polished, tuned etc). The BEST stuff i found was Dynamite Nobel brand, its just tuff to find, and i use it for night time animals. (and yes i called the MNR - NRIC and got the go ahead to shoot so don't bash me!)

Hi!
Got some impressive results with those cbs today. I touroughly cleaned my barrel with clp and let some sit there for 3-4 days. Today I fired 3 rounds on a phone book, and the results are quite impressive:2 went straight through, and one almost made it, only about 100 pages left. It still drops too much to fire past 25 yds though...but they are so silent...it'll be fun to shoot squirrels all year long... it's still more power and more accurate than my .22 pellet gun.
