10/22 Takedown Accuracy

Tried my new stainless 10/22 takedown this weekend, and accuracy with iron sights was awful. Groups were at least 6 inches at 25 m. My buddy had a 50 year old Cooey with irons that shot groups 1/4 the size. Are the takedowns less accurate, or are all 10/22s like this?
 
There are a couple of things with the take down that cause them issues with accuacy, the most important thing is making sure the barrel/receiver connection is as tight as you can get it. If you gun clicks together effortlessly, tighten the collar. To make sure that it's right, assemble the gun and tighten the collar on the receiver until you can't get it any tighter. The other critical thing is the screw that holds the action into the stock- that is the same as any other 10/22 - you need to play with the torque until you find the sweet spot. Another thing to consider is that the sights suck for accuracy work. I'd strongly recomend replacing them with pretty much anything else. With a little work and a reasonable optic hitting a 6 inch plate at 200 is do-able.
 
Any keyholes?
There was one at the range a year ago that was key holing at ten yards.
Check your rifling and make sure it goes all the way through the bore . . . heard of another with no rifling the last two inches of the bore.
 
IME, OEM sights are relatively hard to see. Some aftermarket sights might help facilitate better results.

OP, assuming you're not well below average of a shooter...I think there's something wrong with your gun. You should get WAY better accuracy out of the worst type of ammo even with the stock set of sights. I agree with enefgee, take a look at the take-down connection.

I feed the cheapest ammo through my TD and get 6in groups at 50m stock sights.
 
They same torquing the 2 key fixings (stock to action/forend to barrel) is another area critical to accuracy in these rifles. Start at 10 and see what the accuracy is like, then up to 20, and again to 30, and back down again.

I have two, and they are not the same as a fixed bull barrelled version but I wasn't expecting it to be. I think these are never going to be the same in terms of accuracy, and 1 MOA at 50m is the very best I can occasionally achieve with a 5 shot string.

Does anyone have a scope attached to the barrel or a Tactical Solutions cantilever scoped barrel? I think they might be more accurate by design.

OP, did you get it worked out better at all? Can anyone speak to the accuracy of the heavy barreled variants or tactical solutions barrels on the takedown?
 
I shoot mine offhand and make hits easily on a 10" gong at 150m with the stock irons. Even my brother who is much less experienced was making hits more often than not. I installed some fiber optic sights and now it's even easier. I typically use Win 333/555 junk so I can't say I am unhappy with the accuracy I am getting.
