Hi all. I am interested in scoping my new 10/22 TD with a 3-9x magnification scope but something a little shorter then the standard 11 inches or longer. I noticed that on RFC some guys used a leapers bug buster on theirs which is just over 8 inches long, that to me would be a perfect length. I have never heard of this brand before so I did a little research and it appears to me that this scope is for airguns and is also a red dot as it requires batteries. I have looked at what Nikon has to offer but any short scopes are a 2, 3, or 4 times fixed magnification. What is your take on the bug buster and secondly, do you know of a short 2-7 or 3-9 times scope that is roughly 8 inches or shorter. I do not want to go with a red dot sight as any I have looked at are only 1X magnification. Not looking to break the bank here either anything under $200 works for me. Thanks

Leupold vx1 rimfire, I have the 2-7 on my takedown works great and fits in the bag without issue.

I missed your price point but from my experience it's cheaper to buy good glass from the start. I've got 3 or 4 cheap scopes laying around after changing them out for better.

Hi,
The bug buster does not have a red dot built in it - it is a traditional scope. It requires batteries because it has an illuminated reticle (red, green or off). It has an adjustable objective from 3 yards to infinity, hence the bug buster name. It's a chinese scope, pretty well built, definitely rugged enough for rimfire. It generally gets pretty good reviews. I handled it but I don't own it. I do have a bigger Leapers 3-9x scope - no issues with built quality, and optically is worth the money - generally nice and sharp, but looses a bit of sharpness at 9x.

Is it going to be as good as Leupold? I very much doubt it, but it is less than half the price.

I do remember reading that someone was complaining that on a Ruger 10/22 they had to use an offset mount to bring the scope a bit closer to the eye. ** Found it - borrowed pic below **

Good info here guys. The Leopold looks good and at 10 inches long is getting close to what I would like to have. As for the leapers am I correct in assuming that if the battery craps out you will no longer have a reticle until you could replace it. Seems a hassle in the field unless you carry a spare with you at all times. For me that would be just one more thing to forget at home.

It should be an etched illuminated retical, meaning it would be black unless turned on.

Good to know. I checked the scope rail supplied with the gun and it has grooves the length of the rail as opposed to a couple at each end making the offset mount unnecessary. The rings that come with the scope or others should you wish to change them would work.
