10/22 Takedown Screw- Silly Question?

So I finally bedded my 10/22 and am seriously enjoying shooting paintballs, but I am finding that the screw backs out faster than "usual"? Seems to be about every fifty shots I have to re-torque it. Do I just add a washer? Lock washer? Silicone it? Anyone else have this happen that often?
 
Blue Loctite will help, dab a bit on the screw threads and let it dry before reinstalling. Or get yourself a Volquartsen (VQ) hex head screw instead, you can torque those ones down better and stop it from vibrating loose.

Wham-o: It has gotten worse after bedding it, I think she'd bedded nice and snug (and square and plumb and level) although I didn't pillar bed her, just the action and the end of the barrel to the first rib in the factory synthetic stock.
I put a brick down range on Sunday and it was only after the first couple hundred I noticed she got loose, then I pulled out the torque wrench, started keeping an eye on it, tightened as needed, and posted as soon as I could pry my wife away from farmville:rolleyes: Oh, 24 in/lbs is where she shoots straightest, perhaps not enough?
 
Sorry, if it's just the takedown screw, what thread size is it? I had a 10/22 once but don't remember the size of the screw - something tells me it's 10X32 or something like that. Here's what you could try. Take the takedown screw out, clamp it carefully in a vise and distress the threads near the business end (not too much) with a prick punch - this sounds crazy, but what it does is help to make the fit tighter to an extent, because when you hit the prick punch with the hammer, it obviously drives the punch into the steel, raising a little edge around the hole. I have seen old hands doing this before. As said previously, you could also use a suitable grade of thread locking compound, or a lockwasher, or a combination of both. Best regards, Tony
 
It's possible to cut threads on a rod with some dies bought from Brownells. I have made 10X32 screws that had to be lapped to screw all the way home this way. Only thing is there has to be a precisely machined root diameter to start the threads straight on the shank. The drawback is that you have to order more expensive stuff from Brownells. On the upside, at the end of the day you will have more cool tools from Brownells in your workshop! :D

Hmm short screw... it is a couple mil shorter than the stock one, is that enough to make a difference? I'll head over to the LGS today and compare to the rest in the bin...
fat tony: Thank you for the detailed fix! I do love new tools:cool: I'll pick up a chunk of threaded stock and see where everything is seating in the reciever and go from there...

Hex head take down screws are 13/16" long and Ruger OEM take down screws are 1" (and 12-24 threads)
Your bedding may have lifted everything slightly and now your not getting enough thread grab to keep things secure.
Try a factory screw and just see if that makes a difference....;)

If this is what the area looks like, you can always counter-bore the hole deeper and bob would be your uncle again.

lol that guy could not hold his nose and shell our $ 9 bucks for a proprietary screw. Whenever someone mentions the adjective: "proprietary" when referring to something firearm related; I start reaching for my tire checker. :mad: :p

OK. Hex head screws are indeed shorter, my bedding has lifted the action a hair, and counterboring the escut...excuti... the brass thingy along with the dab o dry loc-tite will be the mod of the week for my rifle. Thank you all for your very helpful suggestions, most appreciated. I'll post back on Sunday after sending a round or two down range (oh darn more shooting:)).

Well that seems to have fixed it, pushed about 300 rounds through the barrel and she's still nice n tight, would've shot more but the rain fogged up my NcStar (I know, I know... but look at all the money I saved:rolleyes:. Sigh, think I'll just mount my TRS-25 and be done with it - for now:cool:...) Thank you all again!
