Hi all,

For those who have a 10/22 TD with the Magpul Backpacker stock, I'd like feedback on scope mounting and accuracy experience.

1. Optic mounted traditionally on 10/22
2. Optic mounted on barrel using Magpuls adapter. (supposedly more consistent accuracy as optic is mounted on barrel)

Cheers!

After tightening the barrel nut so it’s on the tight side to lock up barrel it does quite well for accuracy on the 25yard line with the scone mounted traditionally. (Usually under 1/2”).

My savage A22 rifle is much more accurate, but I find this very acceptable for a take down rifle that I can throw in my back pack on my motorcycle. I really enjoy mine actually and it far more accepting of ammo than my savage A22.

It so far seems to return to zero just fine with the vortex crossfire II 2-7x32 on it.

Mines keeps the zero pretty well too.

Traditionnal mount ( EGW 10 moa rail ).

Like Tinybear said, keep the barrel tension nut pretty stiff.

I like my 10/22 TD, its pretty accurate for what it is.

Reliably inaccurate is what I have found on my two takedowns. (Worse than a stock 10/22 by another MOA or more.)

I think my next move is a barrel mounted scope, see if that improves the situation.

Plinking grade at this stage.

Candocad.

Leading up to a run at a mapleseed course i did a lot of testing. what i found was the return to zero is generally fine so long as your takedown nut is good and snug.

where i ran in to issus is if you load up and tension with a sling or something while supporting the forend it will drive the zero off with the optic mounted to the receiver.

there are takedown barrels that also have a rail on them that get around this. i used the backpacker mount and a very light leupold scout scope with two rings on the eyepiece side to get around these shortcomings. works fabulously so far.

I run a scope mounted to the receiver on mine, group size has been impressive IMO, 0.6-0.7" at 50 yards with CCI SV. I did learn its super sensitive from a rest or if your putting inconsistent pressure on the forend, group size didn't change, but resting the forend on the bench vs resting close to the receiver/under the mag well resulted in POI shifting like 4-6" at those distances. That's with the barrel tension adjusted as stiff as I could manage.

I did take the rifle down and reassemble a few times at that range visit, POI didn't seem to change at all.

My experience with four different Ruger Takedowns with conventionally mounted scopes is no,they do not return to Zero after re-assembly.
That being said they can be a half inch out at 25yds, which will still hit a grouse or pop can and is quite acceptable to some.
I spent many hours fiddling with barrel tension and burned through premium ammo and different optics configurations to finally come to the conclusion that Magpul got it right with their barrel mount.
A barrel mounted red dot lets me make reliable hits on cans out to 50yds and is 100% repeatable when re-assembling.
I finalized on the configuration in the lower photo. Whistlepig 12" barrel and the Magpul optic mount with red dot gives me consistent .75" groups @ 50yds with CCI SV, and that is stunning compared to the plinker grade accuracy I experienced with factory barrels.

If you don't take my word for it feel free to head over to rimfire.central.com and read through the takedown posts, I'm just trying to save you some time and hassle.
