Just got my first gun (The first I own anyway,) yesterday. A Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical ordered from Frontier Firearms. Wanted a trainer to brush up on skills not used in over a decade, and this one seemed to fit the bill.
As strange as it may seem, the first thing that struck me was the smell. Even if it's a brand new rifle, it smells just like the old Lee Enfields we used in Naval cadets back during my teen years. How nostalgic.
On a less mushy note:
The Hogue furniture provides a great grip, but I can see how some may not like it. Everything sticks to it! The rifle's weight feels right, heavier then I imagined it would be, very front heavy.
The bolt handle seems tiny to me, a one finger affair far too small for my taste, so I'll likely change it for something larger. Suggestions are welcome!
Plastic trigger also feels a bit cheap, but I dry fired it a few times as suggested by the manual, and the pull is light, short and crisp, at least compared to my limited experience.
The included bipod is a nice touch, especially since I learned to shoot from prone, but I don't like that it takes up the forward sling spot. Also, there is a provided lock, which fits into the open breach, but it blocks off the top rail, meaning I have to take the scope off every time I lock it. A trigger lock solved that problem.
Once I installed the rail, my old red dot scope fits right in. I got some 25 round mags while I was at it. Can't wait to bring it to a range. I have a brick of Winchester rounds to put through it. It's good to be back in the game
