Just got my first gun (The first I own anyway,) yesterday. A Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical ordered from Frontier Firearms. Wanted a trainer to brush up on skills not used in over a decade, and this one seemed to fit the bill.

As strange as it may seem, the first thing that struck me was the smell. Even if it's a brand new rifle, it smells just like the old Lee Enfields we used in Naval cadets back during my teen years. How nostalgic. :D

On a less mushy note:

The Hogue furniture provides a great grip, but I can see how some may not like it. Everything sticks to it! The rifle's weight feels right, heavier then I imagined it would be, very front heavy.

The bolt handle seems tiny to me, a one finger affair far too small for my taste, so I'll likely change it for something larger. Suggestions are welcome!

Plastic trigger also feels a bit cheap, but I dry fired it a few times as suggested by the manual, and the pull is light, short and crisp, at least compared to my limited experience.

The included bipod is a nice touch, especially since I learned to shoot from prone, but I don't like that it takes up the forward sling spot. Also, there is a provided lock, which fits into the open breach, but it blocks off the top rail, meaning I have to take the scope off every time I lock it. A trigger lock solved that problem.

Once I installed the rail, my old red dot scope fits right in. I got some 25 round mags while I was at it. Can't wait to bring it to a range. I have a brick of Winchester rounds to put through it. It's good to be back in the game :D

Congratulations on your new rifle!! Looks very business like. As you noted the bolt handle is quite small. If you can, try putting the attachment screws of your red-dot on the other side. That'll give you some extra room.
I have a red-dot on my sons .22 and we both love it. However to get real accurate you need a scope. I'm looking to put an NcStar 3-9 Tactical w/red-dot sight on my 10/22; that way you get the best of both worlds.
Cheers!!

Thanks!
The screw idea is fantastic, alas the screws cannot be switched sides. :(

I like that peep sight and mag release. Where might I get them? I have a 10/22 target model. Also is that a factory barrel or aftermarket supplier?

Everything except the sights and mags came as is factory installed. This is the Target Tactical model, also known as VLEH. The barrel is just over 16 inches, heavy, and hammer forged.

The red dot sight is my old Ncstar 45mm. It's the real deal, but until now, I've mostly used it for paintball. The fact that the lens is so damn big means you can get a beat on targets real quick. I'll get an actual scope somewhere down the line.

To get back on the subject. Is anyone using Kidd parts on their 10/22? I am mainly interested in the accuracy gains by those using Kidd barrels and or trigger groups. If you use the complete kidd system including receiver and bolt group I would appreciate hearing from you on the accuracy of your system.
Regards
