i am sure we have a post like this but there to much page to look at it lol i just bought a 10/22 target and i am looking for a good scope under 300.00 and less if i can, i want to shoot in 50 to 200 yards thank for your suggestions

Based on the interwebz reports I bought a Simmons 3-9x40 based on the reports saying that it was a better scope than the $150 price suggested. And it's true that it's not at all a bad scope.

But then I ran across a Nikon 2-7x32 P-22 scope for $200. The Nikon gives up that last 2x magnification but it makes up for it in the clarity of the image. In use I found that both are just fine. But there's no doubt that the Nikon's clarity at full zoom results in less eye strain and more comfortable longer sessions. And at 200 yards I was aiming for and seeing the shot hitting clearly on a 4 inch steel disc thanks to that clarity.

But I do agree that the Simmons is better the cost suggests. It's not at all a bad scope. If you want to keep the cost down you could do worse. But that slight fuzziness at full zoom makes it harder to see the shots hitting the disc for my use. The Simmons was just fuzzy enough at 9x's that I could not see the shots hitting with that same degree of clarity.

So all in all if I were doing it over again I'd buy Nikon over the Simmons. And if I were to sell off any of the few scopes I've got the Nikon would certainly be staying with me.

Another factor I like with these two scopes is the target turrets. I'm not a hunter so I don't need the low profile weather proofing caps and I don't want to deal with the need for a coin to set the elevation and windage. Both of these scopes have the easy to use and easy to read target turrets.

So if you want to keep the cost as low as possible while still getting something decent then you'll be more than happy with the Simmons. But if you'll be staring through the scope a lot for longer sessions or want that clarity of seeing your shot impacts I'd suggest paying the extra for a suitable Nikon rimfire scope. Out of the five brands I've dabbled with it's the nicest and most clear for a price under what you can buy a Leupold.

You should see the other thread covering cheap scopes started yesterday...

Overkill but I had this doing nothing in the closet, works great on my SR-22. Seems it's $90; 6-24x50 AO Varmint Riflescope http://www.shopbarska.com/Hunting_Scopes-BARSKA_6_24x50_AO_VARMINT_SCOPE.html

It was on a Mossberg 5.56/.223 but I moved it to my SR-22 after letting it sit in the closet for months. I just did a test on the SR-22 to see if the extractor and Butler Creek mag was working any better. Put 25 in a hole the size of a dime at 25m. I was concentrating so much on seeing if the mag modifications were working I didn't notice how good a grouping I got until I packed up. That was with 40g round tip M-22...in a black box.

Need to setup for 50m or 100m if it shoots this well later. Just glad the extractor issues are fixed. BC Mag had no FTF or FTE this time out but need a few more tests to see if it's not a fluke.

for 50-200 target shooting (I assume silhouette) you will want a lot more then 9x and an AO scope (adjustable objective) that has a parallax adjustable down to 25 yards or so for shooting closer if needed.

on the 'low end' I bought a Vortex crossfire II 6-18x44 AO a year and a half ago and it was just under $300, looks very clear for the price and works great so far, I've had it on a couple of 22's and a 223.

I put a Nikon Prostaff Target EFR 3-9x40 on both my 10-22 target and my Savage Mark II BSEV and I love it. It's a very bright and clear scope and has adjustable parallax down to 25 yards. I got mine for $239.00 each and I would highly recommend it.

Some good advice. A scope with max 9X isn't enough mag for 200 -- not by a long shot. And get AO so you can stay focussed on what you're doing.

For under $300 check out the Hawke Vantage 6-24X44 scope. They have a fine reticle with mildots and Side Focus. https://www.dlairgun.com/Scopes/Hawke/078_Vantage_SF_6-24X44_1_2_MIL_DOT_14162.html

Bushnell has their new series of Rimfire scopes. 6-18 x 40 with calibrated turrets.
I own one and it is a great scope for under $200 for a 22LR.
