Did a DIY trigger job on my 10/22, I had done one on my last 10/22 as well, that turned out well, but I mostly just cleaned it up. This time I wanted to lighten it significantly. I checked operation periodically as I went, and ended up with it just under 3lbs which I was happy with. Everything functions well, except if the safety is on, and I squeeze the trigger, then turn the safety off, it releases the hammer. As you squeeze the trigger, you can see the hammer just tweaks ever so slightly, I can smack and rattle and bump the gun from any direction with considerable force, and it will not release the hammer while the safety is still engaged, but as soon as I disengage the safety, it releases. Any thoughts? If I took the trigger job to far, and this is the reason, then I don't have an issue with buying a new sear/hammer. But I don't want to spend money on an aftermarket hammer and sear, if it will end up doing the same thing (ie; if its an issue with the safety/trigger group).

I like tweaking my own stuff and on most of my guns I do. With the 10-22 trigger I've read more guys have problems than not doing their own so I just saved myself the headache and bought a hammer from hical.ca.

Good luck with yours but if you can't figure it out the target hammer brought mine down to about 3lbs. It still has creep though.

You probably have negative engagement with your sear nose and hammer hook. Buy a drop-in replacement sear and hammer set, or learn how to obtain positive engagement (assuming you haven't removed too much material already).

Pull the sear and peen the leg that engages with the safety. A couple smacks with a hammer, not too hard, dragging the hammer as you strike to elongate that leg. Reassemble and check that the safety still works. See if the problem is gone. Lather, rinse, repeat until you have zero movement when you pull the trigger. If gets it too long, 'hone' the tip down, don't hammer it.

If the gun doesn't pass a bump test with the safety off, don't waste you time working on it. Just replace the parts you worked on.
