On Black Friday I picked up a stainless and synthetic 10/22 for $280, since then I have got a Butler Creek 25 round mag for it, and that is about it. Today I ordered a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor and Volquartsen buffer pin, as well as some Tech sights. I'm not really tricking mine out with a bigger barrel and all that, my main goal is to make it a good Bug out Gun. It fits that roll pretty good in stock form but it has about one malfunction in every 100 shells fired, I'd like to get that down to 0. Stock sights are horrible, so hopefully the Tech sights help out a bit as I want to keep iron sights on it. The buffer pin was just to try out as it was cheap. Will give a good range report when I get all the parts installed and ready to go.

That's a good buy. Can you or anyone tell me if there is a 2 or 3 zoom red dot scope that will work good on a Magnum research 22 with picatinny rail. Everything I seem to find is calibrated for a 223. Something that is reasonably accurate from 50 to 100 yards.

I thought it was decent, went looking for a takedown model but it was a good $100 more, so I just got the regular model. As for red dots, not sure what you could get, I never tried one before.

I love the tech sights on my 10/22, I think you're going to be very pleased with them. The only other upgrade I might suggest would be an extended bolt knob, though if you're handy it can be fun to make your own custom extension.

For an optic I run a strike fire red dot. The dot is a little big at 4 moa, maybe I'll splurge for an aim point t1 or vortex pst in 1 to 4 power. Any of the mentioned are great for 50 to 100 yards.

Trs -25 red dot is awesome but not what your looking for.
The pws mag release is wicked. I hope youve read about the diy autobolt release. Super simple. I didnt do it for two month after getting the gun. Silly I waited that long to do it.
The bolt buffer helps alot!
If you ever want a cheap ultralight stock, check out the axiom stock.

these failures you speak of..... are you sure that isnt just the ammo?
cause lord knows 22 ammo is not very reliable.
and if i might make a suggestion to you, as a fella 10/22 kool-aid drinker and bug out theory follower i would suggest this, and its a $5 suggestion to keep in line with your keep it cheap upgrades.
the bolt buffer you picked up is good BUT and i only say this because you mentioned bug out rifle, those solid rubber bolt buffers are a PITA to get in and out especially in the field with no or limited tools.... if i might make a suggestion, Kidd bolt buffer, its a 2 piece deal, has a metal pin inner and a rubber outer sleeve, gives you the best of both worlds, gives you the rubber bolt buffer that makes shooting smoother and less 'clangy' and it is uber easy to pop in and out.
those rubber bolt buffers are my nemesis, i seem to always have to use pliers to get them in and out, real pain. Just mentioning it since you dropped the bug out set up.
well that and i think they are far better.
and for the same price its a no brainer.

also, still on the bug out lines here, i like your sticking with open sites, i did the same with my bug out gun, but i also put a old 4x9 scope on a one piece mount in my bag as well. some times its nice to plop the scope on there and have the added bonus of making your first shot your best shot.
end of days bug out bag theory speaking.

you may wanna ask that in the Optics Forum?
the people that lurk in there are generally more up on optics then us clowns here in the rimefire forum.

The vortex pst line is either in milrads or moa. Put your ammo info into a ballistic program, like the g7 ballistic calculator, print off your drop card and you have the perfect drop. Take the same scope, put it onto your big rifles, do the ballistic info again and boom, the scope works for that rifle. And the vortex scopes have illuminated reticles if you need it.

So I've been debating on getting a 10/22 for some time now, but I have a feeling I won't enjoy the gun without a few hundred dollars of accessories on it. Opinions on that?

Not necessarily.. The 10/22 is a good gun on its own. Because I was planning on competing with mine, I bot a bolt upgrade kit (firing pin and extractor - probably $30ish), extended mag release ($30, not needed for casual shooting), extended charging handle ($20-30, probably not needed) and a buffer ($5). Even with all that, you'd still be under $100 and not in the multiples of $100. I also bought a stock for it in the $140 ballpark but that's DEFINITELY not something you'd wanna sink your money into for a shtf gun. In the end, I'd most likely stick with the bolt upgrade kit and a buffer to a tune of $35. Everything else is a luxury or meant to cover other needs not jiving with yours.

I think a 10/22, straight out of the box, is some of the most fun you can have in a non-restricted rimfire. The fact that you can build on it too is just icing on the cake.

The simple fact is, if you have a stock 10/22 and shoot next to a CZ or savage, your groups most likely twice the size.
The next upgrade for the 10/22 is a barrel.
Now your into a 10/22 for $700-$1k+

my original 10/22 i got when i was 12 and i shot it stock with NO UPGRADES for 28 years and LOVED IT!
ill bet that gun has over 100k rounds down the pipe.
flawless gun.
i rarely if ever cleaned it too.
the gun is a TANK!

i didnt get into customizing and adding on stuff until i was older and needed an excuse to get away from my wife and daughters!
no, just kidding, i didnt get into all the add on's and building until i had lots of money to burn and lots of free time to shoot and play.
as far as im concerned the gun is fantastic out of the box and extraordinary once upgraded.

i even picked up a stock 10/22 for my daughters last year.
i did put it on a Hogue stock because i had an extra one laying around and i did put fiber optic sites on it because i wanted to try them out myself and my girls like FO sites. i dont plan on doing anything to that gun and my girls like it the way it is.

10/22 is perfectly fine when it comes to practical accuracy. If you want a bench gun, you go with a quality bolt-action. If you want something to take in the bush and bag a gopher or 100, you take the 10/22, that's why I'd rather put some $$$ into enhanced reliability instead of getting a barrel that will double the weight of the entire thing.

They are good out of the box, just recently I added a bolt buffer, lightened the trigger pull to about 3lbs, and did the bolt hold open mod. I think I'll leave it at that, as it works pretty good now.

I think you are correct. If you want an accurate semi rimfire, get a volquartsen or tactical solutions x ring. If fun shooting is what you are after, a stock 22 with irons or a red dot and lots of ammo is fun too. I know myself, had I bought a 1022 I would have bought all the upgrades up until where I would have found it cheaper to go tacsol in the first place.
