10/22 vs .17hmr 93r17

Looking at a ruger 10/22 for around the $650 mark brand new it is the target lite with the black(looks more grey) laminated stock https://www.ruger.com/products/1022TargetLite/specSheets/21186.html
They sell for around $850 canadian they have a bx trigger, target barrel.

On the other hand I'm looking at a 17hmr Savage BGTVXP Series Bolt Action Rifles with Scope from cabelas that was $524
Has heavy barrel and accutrigger

Looking for opinions on what to get if the ruger I still need a scope, with the savage probably still needs a scope even though it comes with one.

I dont have my heart set to either of them
 
What are you looking to accomplish? Accuracy/target shooting? Hunting rig?
If it’s accuracy, a bolt gun is often the better option.
Between the 2 calibers, 22 is much more affordable to shoot and more readily available than 17hmr. And if target shooting is your plan, there is way more target ammo available in 22lr vs 17hmr.

All I will say is you will shoot more with .22 LR than you will with .17 HMR so take it from there.
 
I like my 17 hmr rifles, with the right ammo they are really accurate at 100 yards, and shooting gophers with them, the gophers are split in two pieces often. That said, the ammo is expensive, and they are much noisier. The 17hmr is more of a small niche product. I can't see using it for general plinking at the cost of ammo. With a 22 and the right inexpensive ammo, you will shoot as good at 50 yards as the 17hmr does at 100, and at 1/8 the cost. My recommendation is get a 22 first. Also, if you want the 22 to be really accurate, don't get a 10/22, because it might disappoint. It's accuracy is not excellent, it is good, at best. A bolt action 22 will typically outshoot a 10/22. But a 10/22 is more fun, being a semi-auto, IMO. So if you can give up a little on the accuracy, and particularly at 100 yards, get a 22, a 10/22.
 
Or you could get a tuff 22 from dlask for close to the price of that ruger junk. That way you will have twice the gun and will be able to hit stuff.
 
I did own a 17hmr once, shot it a few times and sold it for a .223 as I can reload better performing ammo for cheaper with a few simple tools.

I do still own a bunch of .22 rifles though!

I actually have a 10-22 target, but unless you are stuck on a semi-auto (which is doesn't sound like) I would just pick up a Savage Mark 2 for a couple hundred bucks. It will out shoot the 10-22 and if you don't like it or you get the 'accuracy itch' and want to upgrade to a CZ or even an Anschutz or Vudoo you can always just sell it, always people looking for a cheap bolt .22!

I sold my savage in .17hmr. Ammo was too costly and too hard to find. For those two reasons i do not recomend any gun in .17 hmr.

^this, and Hoyt is spot-on too. 17HMR is incredible for what it is (=rimfire with that much reach/accuracy) but for me, 17HMR is too much noise/$ to be a fun target gun. Stellar (small) varmint destroyer, I can say with a boat load of authority...but for targets? No thanks. WAY more fun to be had in the 22LR arena, available guns/ammo options...remarkable. Now, I like to shoot allot...I tend to go through a decent amount of ammo every time I'm out with rimfires...so...ammo cost is a big factor for me. It may not be for you, but in any case...it doesn't change the fact that the ammo options in 22LR eclipse those available in 17HMR by a huge margin.

A note on the guns you're considering~I've tried to stop saying "get this/don't get that" but neither of the rifles you mentioned would be on my list personally. I did once have a thumbhole stocked Savage heavy barrel in 17HMR, and while I loved the look/feel of the gun...I pretty much decided to sell it after my first (hunting) outing with it. Maybe it's my big hands, but shooting prone...I just found that it sort of cocked my right wrist at a weird angle when I got low to the ground. Never noticed when I was sighting it in on a proper bench.

Anyhow, I'm not obsessed with accuracy necessarily..but..I've owned basically the same rifle, and I've owned 1 Ruger 10/22. (standard carbine) Had to have both guns at the time...and now I don't have a desire to own either. A Savage B-series gun? Sure. A 93R17GV? Yep. 93R17 TR? Absolutely~I've even got some time behind one of those. I just think that thumbhole stock is the worst-fitting one I've ever owned.

My own 17HMR is a Marlin 917 heavy barrel with a Rifle Basix trigger. Basic as could be, excellent trigger, cheap mags, and ONLY ever used out west to pulverize gophers. lol
 
Question I thought the 10/22as a platform was a good gun to start for plinking?
The savage comes in different stocks as well being essentially the same gun just different stocks, I'm not hooked on the thumb hole stock as I mentioned my heart's not set on either of these guns.
The hunting or plinking question is both I would plan on doing a bit of both the 17hmr is cheaper then my 30-06 to shoot( I haven't shot alot with it yet and haven't done any reloading and still dont think it would be cheaper but tell me different if I'm wrong). I understand the 22 to be cheaper and I know quite alot cheaper there for you can shoot more and one of the reasons I was going to buy it, but then some of my friends that are more into the gun scene were saying 17hmr over 22 so here I am asking for more options to give me a wider selection of opinions to base my own on some of which I already have option on.
Any suggestions for other gun selection is much appreciated and will be looked up by me to help me out in my decision.

If you want a gun for target,plinking and grouse get a 22lr. If you want it for pest control go with a 17HMR.

10/22 is a good platform but don’t get a Ruger. Buy a Dlask 10/22 instead. The Dlask is a little more expensive but is a way better gun. The Rugers are very poor value in comparison. A Dlask will be a lot more accurate than a Ruger.
