Okay guys, I know this has probably been argued to death, but I am in the need for a semi auto plinker. I am not really interested in aftermarket modifications so that is not a factor. I just need a reliable shooter for plinking and hunting those waskily wabbits!! Like I said, the most important thing is reliablity and decent short range accuracy. Price is a consideration too, I see that Wholesale advertises the basic 10/22 for $249, and the 597 for $149. Do I need to spend the extra $100????

I have owned a 10/22, all I can say is reliable and accurate do not come with a stock 10-22, that is why everyone pay extra money to get it modify. Some 597 will have feeding problem depends on how luck you are, Both make has their own problem. Try Marlin, some member here with their semi.

Marlin 7000.......more accurate than 10-22's (out-of-the-box) and almost reliable as 10-22 are. I bought mine 2 weeks ago, not accurate as it should be (mine seem to be an exeption cause I never heard bad comments about the 7000's) but I'll wait to have put at least one brick trough it before being disapointed. Even so, I'm able to do 3/4 to one inch @ 50 with CCI Green Tag...and i'll ordered some match grade ammo to see if it's better. As for the reliability, super, no fail to eject, no fail to feed, no miss fire and no ''stove pipe'' in 300 rounds. I hesitated before buying one because of my horrible experience with a 597 (pencil barrel) i had couple years ago. Accuracy: 2 inch@ 50 with is favorite ammo(I tried all the ammo available here) and always stuck.....stove pipe....miss fire...ok maybe it's a bad one but I've always heard bad comment about 597's.
IMHO, 10-22 are great rifles, reliable, well made but you'll have to put 200-300 bucks in it to be able to have a good accuracy.......and they are more expensive than the 7000's. Bad things on the 7000 is the crappy one piece trigger-gard (you have to be carefull to not over tightened the action screws) and the heavy trigger pull........and no after market trigger(you'll have to do it by your self or by a competent gunsmith). It's a plus for 10-22's,...they have a lot of aftermarket triggers!

i love the 10/22... I own anything within 75 meters and I can't shoot worth a damn...I know you mentioned mods are not your thing BUT lots of goodies are avalible if you should change your mind...high cap. mags, stocks, scopes, etc

shopping is .5 the fun IMHO

happy huntin!

I love my 10/22. Its accurate and reliable. I've shot lots of times with buddies with the 597 and they have had nothing but issues. They are real sensitive to dirt and crud and tend to fail to feed after 500 rounds, they are harder to field strip, and on top of that they have nowhere near the aftermarket accessories as the 10/22. THe local gun shop has refused to warranty the 597 due to the fact thatin the last dozen sold ten came back with reliability issues. That goes to say something about the remington quality.

The 597 is tighter made and a better .22lr out of the box IMO, however, the negatives are it will get dirtier faster than the 10/22 and is a little harder to clean.

The 10/22 is much easier to clean IMO and can go longer before cleaning.

Tough one. If you go 10/22 you need to get an "Volq Extractor" to improve reliability in feeding. The 597 is fine as it is.
Oh yeah, the 597 only has 10rnd mags, but the 10/22 is endless :)

Sadly they are not making rifles like the used to without them being seriously marked up in price, or needing hundreds of dollars thrown in to do the job after you bring it home.

Have a good read through the forums at the Rimfire Central link listed in the post above, and you will get the idea.

How about something different?

Here's another vote for the 10/22. It's been around for years and it's design is proven, not to mention it's about the funnest gun you could ever get!

I have a 597 and haven't had any real trouble with it. I did wear out the first mag that came with it, but these mags seem to be on the shelf most places. I think the rotary mag on the 10-22 is better, otherwise there's not much difference between these guns in terms of shootablity

I vote for the 10/22. I have over 60k rounds through mine and it still functions flawlessly with standard or HV ammo.

go ruger. there accurate from the box and lots of fun if you want to change parts. ruger least you can find an aftermarket stock that fits. most 22's don't fit men very well.

Go for the 10/22. They're easy to clean, easy to take apart. IF you ever do want to customize, possibilities are endless. You can also find parts for them a lot easier than for the 597.

Some of the modifications that are recommended for the 10/22 arent that expensive to do and you do it yourself so thats what I would recommend.

You may not want to do any mods, but if something breaks or fails to operate correctly a 10/22 would be a heck of a lot easier to find replacement parts for. I have a 10/22 that I put a recoil buffer in and a new Power Custom hammer to drop the trigger pull. I also ended up putting a Boyd's thumbhole laminate on it when the original stock got damaged in a basement flood. It is reliable and I find that it is pretty accurate for a semi-auto with a factory tube.

i have both:
10/22 in 22LR and 22Mag
597 in 17HMR
after buying the 597 i pretty much quit shooting the Rugers...the trigger is better out of the box and the mag release is WAY better on the Remington plus in the 10/22Mag you only get to shoot about 30 rounds before it fails to eject(i know there is a VQ ejector but shouldn't it work out of the box?)

I agree the 10/22 has issues out of the box for some, but the mods make it a great shooter...I did most of the parts inside mine and have gone out shooting gophers all day with out a hitch.

I've been lucky with my 10/22 out of the box in terms of reliability and accuracy but I've added a VQ hammer, bolt buffer and extended mag release for 'better functionality'. It is reasonably accurate and I enjoy shooting it. For a cheap plinker I'd look at a Marlin 795 which is similar to the Marlin 7000 but doesn't have the heavy barrel that the 7000 has. I believe the 795 is around 150 at either Russell's, Wholesale or S.I.R. There is also the Savage Model 64 for about 10 dollars more.

10/22 All The Way My Son And I Were In Sask Gohper Shooting In July 05 And We Shot 9000 Round And Only Trouble Was On The Second Day When We Shot 3500 Rounds, We Cleaned Them And They Work Great After That We Used Remington Cheap Shot Cyclones I Think Couting Down To July This Year To Go Again

I have a 597 (22 mag) and a 10/22 DSP. On the 597 I have changed the hammer and extractor to VQ models and it shoots great. On the 10/22 I have changed the hammer, mag release, barrel and would have changed the stock if it wasn't the deluxe model. I think if you are not going to do any modifications to the gun then you will be happier with the 597. However if there is even a remote possibility that you may want to do some modifications go with the 10/22 changing these guns are at least half the fun of owning them. ZM
